If it's called "laptop" it should work on a lap.

I don't want anyone to pay for anything they don't use themselves.

Depends on the needs. When I worked for schools we got a lot of donated
hardware. Free was better than paid for, so it was "better". I installed Linux
and used it for things like the bell system at one school (the company putting
in the PA system wanted 2000+ dollars for a box to do that!) and, at multiple
schools I had labs of Linux systems. They were limited, but they also
introduced students to Linux, and many had older systems at home they wanted
to put Linux on, so I provided CDs with Ubuntu Linux on them (and, later Mint
Linux).

Other times Windows has been better for a needed task -- so that is the
"better" choice. My kids both have Chromebooks because they were cheaper and
"good enough", though the more I work with them the less impressed I am (the
version of Chrome on ChromeBooks does not work as well as the versions on Mac
or Windows!)

For my own desktop use, though, I use macOS almost exclusively.

To a large extent that is the choice you make. Another comparison I recently
watched:

https://youtu.be/_wFmj1nMd-k

The Air gets amazing reviews. And notice being "quiet" is one of the reasons
listed (as is price, power, video rendering, instant wake on open, no power
throttling on battery, excellent keyboard, excellent build, excellent monitor,
etc.) Only thing noted it is not good for: gaming (which is no surprise).

For the fan comments: https://youtu.be/_wFmj1nMd-k?t=522

You might not notice the fan noise... until you use a system which has no such
noise. I know for me I am bothered by fan noises. I appreciate the low sound
of Apple products.

When needed they speed up... and I bet what you say is not audible often is.

You could make a machine with multiple CPUs and GPUs and more... but it would
be bigger and more expensive.

They can be... but might the neural engines of the M1 be able to do much the
same? Not sure.

Or maybe you're not seeing what you think you are. Here's what I see:

Regarding the "Path" of the post you replied to with...

"Question for you! Why does your header info start with this line?"

.... and this being the post you replied to:

<4nIKI.24279$Nq7.7272@fx33.iad>

The "Path" for that post is:

Path: ...!weretis.net!feeder6.news.weretis.net!feeder8.news.weretis.net!newsreader4.netcologne.de!news.netcologne.de!peer01.ams1!peer.ams1.xlned.com!news.xlned.com!peer03.iad!feed-me.highwinds-media.com!news.highwinds-media.com!fx33.iad.POSTED!not-for-mail

It's sorta similar to (view 0:46 to 1:05)
<https://youtu.be/8R8ptQS_3ew?t=46>

And you *know* what Shadow would say ;)

It's interesting reasoning but it doesn't seem to be realistic. Besides,
considering how tyrannical the governments of the world have already
become with their reaction to the Kung Flu, I am not sure that as an
American, I would be willing to make it even easier for them to bully me
around than it already is.
