That's a nice product OK, but it's not sized exactly- being too big for
a compact-sized laptop. Also, it's thicker than I'd want to stick in a
backpack or carry-on suitcase and more than I'd want to spend to have
several of them around the house.

Even with today's crazy limber prices, home center stores sell a 4x8
sheet of Masonite for under $12, a 2X4 sheet for under $4 and the pieces
in the scrap bin are free, especially if you send a good-looking wife or
girlfriend in!

Glue a layer or two of felt on the bottom and your bare legs will be
just fine :-)

I generally use my Dell LT with the bottom grill on a cloth surface. I
can tell when it gets hot when the fan starts. I used to then sit it on
top of my Android tablet (face down) until it cooled off and the fan
stopped running. After awhile I said screw it and just let it be hot -
sink or swim. So far its been swimming but the fan noise is annoying.
Final solution: Using this grill free fan free Chromebook which does
what I need most of the time anyway. Aren't technical solutions wonderful...

| I didn't know there was any such design. I'm always
careful to put them on a hard surface, so our laptop here
could even have side vents that I haven't noticed. (HP)

Awhile back a friend asked me to fix her Win8.1 laptop.
She'd been loading photos when it died and the hard disk
had to be dismantled to get the data. I imagined her
sitting up in bed, loading pictures of her kids, with the
laptop resting on a nice, fluffy blanket and cooking the
hard disk. The worst part is that there really isn't any
reason for the average person to think that might be a
problem. And I suppose in that case even side vents might
get covered.

No, you tell me. It's either powerful or cool, not both. If they claim both, it probably thermally throttles if you work it hard for more than several seconds.

Bollocks, the fan makes no detectable noise when spinning at minimum speed.

I'm sure there's a similar chip for a normal computer. There's no way someone has suddenly made them much more efficient, this is a gradual process that's been going on for decades.

I was once called to a desktop that had stopped running. The power supply fan had failed but nobody noticed (who would?), and the hard disk was directly on top of the power supply. The disk had seized solid and was painful to touch. Luckily it was networked and all the data was stored centrally.

Now try them on a soft flexible surface like your lap, which blocks the intake of one type.

Nope!

Apple *HAS* made them - *NEW* M1 chips.

It has graphics... and in real world use it works very well.

I just want a government that has more fair and equal representation.

Apple has been working on their own chips for a long time -- for the iPhone
and iPads and others. There are other ARM chips and MS has a version of
Windows that runs on them, it sucks.

The M1 crushes the competition, at least for now.

It can run at lower speeds because of the making use of convection cooling.

I just want a government who prosecutes undeserving people taking
advantage of the system and in effect taking government assistance
from those who truly deserve and need it.

These grifters and welface cheats should be prosecuted to the fullest
extent of the law and forced to make restition on every penny they
scammed the government out of.

And it's going to begin as Biden is spending money the government
doesn't have. The IRS is already gearing up to begin massive audits
targeting suspected tax cheats.

Get ready for neighbor to turn on neighbor.
It's happening already.

It rarely gets throttled in general use... but it can be if you work it hard
for a few minutes (say a video render). A bit long, but a fairly thorough
review after using it for 9 months:

https://youtu.be/se-7rjV6z0s

Used for video editing and more... and it has excellent battery life and
performance, and rarely throttles -- or when it does it is not much slower.

"The included GPU has 8 cores as well,
with 128 total compute units and 2.6 teraflops (FP32)
of throughput (there is one exception here: the
entry level MacBook Air uses a version of the
M1 with a 7-core GPU). The "unified memory"
replaces the need for separate RAM"

Which means the GPU works the same way as Intel Graphics
on a laptop does. It uses system memory.

The TerryFlops32 is about the same as HD 5870.
The best video card you can buy, might be
fifteen times as much TerryFlops32. And the Leet
Floppers only count the FP64 ones (because the
video card companies charge thousands for the privilege
of having large amounts of those). For example, my
video card has an "integer ratio" between FP32 units
and FP64 units, that makes FP64ing with the thing
a waste of time.

There's nothing wrong with that GPU. It's like
lots of other integrated graphics.

Correct.

Right. It will not compete with gaming systems but for general use it is
excellent. Was just using my wife's -- just to help set up calendars and the
like, so I did not push it in any way. But the system was speedy and cool for
the bit of web stuff, calendar fiddling, etc. that I did. Excellent little
machine.

Intel has its own bigLITTLE in the pipe, and as
we speak, Microsoft staff are trying to figure out
what to do with the Scheduler (that assigns
time slices).

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alder_Lake_%28microprocessor%29

One of the complains I've seen in the past is,
"the customers notice that virtually all activity
is on LITTLE, and they wonder why they paid good
cash money for big cores, and the big cores sit
there unused".

I suspect Microsoft has to solve that problem too.
