I've read a number of times... with no idea whether it's true or
not... that the Russian vaccine is roughly 60% effective. If I were
Russian and "face" were important to me, I'd want to disparage the
Pfizer (etc) vaccine too.

It looks to me that the Windows 10 users in this group are a lot more

Exactly. Politicians go on TV and make claims that they have provided
people with a wealth of information but conveniently omit the fact that
they are pushing social networks, media platforms and networks to censor
any information which goes against their narrative. Countless people
have already had their access to the Internet or its services cut, some
have been imprisoned on trumped-up charges and even _words_ are
disallowed from being used on certain services because they might lead
to wrongthink. The most shocking of all of this is that the people who
disagree with us SEE it but refuse to acknowledge that any of this is a
problem.

Like AstraZeneca, it's based on an adenovirus, and the first dose uses
a different adenovirus than the second dose. That allows the second dose
to not face resistance to the transport used by the first dose.

The adenovirus is non-replicating, which means you "don't get a head cold"
from using it.

I've skimmed through that article, but I don't know if there's any good
independent confirmation of the effectiveness numbers. It's unusual
for all age groups to cluster around the same number so tightly.

The problem is that despite their best intentions, the doses don't
_stay_ in the muscle. They manage their way into the rest of the body
which is where the blood clots, whether microscopic or obvious, happen.

Timmy, that's not what that says.

As I explained earlier today in another place, these
fluorescence tests, uses reagents picked for the species of interest.

The types of COVID which are no longer dominant, from
a percentage standpoint, are dropping into oblivion. Things
like Delta are taking over. Why would you be testing for
Alpha today, when there's no significant Alpha to speak of ?

In addition, there are other conditions that a reagent might
test for. Up to some point, you could combine (multiplex)
agents into the same liquid, and if the fluorescence equipment
can assay these items in parallel (X percent this, Y percent that),
then the instrumentation can screen more than one thing during
the same test interval on the machine.

If you can screen for alpha versus delta COVID, you could
add in other things, as long as the signals from each
can be distinguished and quantified by the equipment.

So that's how you can assay two things at the same time, by
having fluorescence of one in "blue", the other in "green".
And then the amount of multiplexing you can do is limited
by the spectral width of each peak. While fluorescence is likely
based on "some quantum mechanics", in some biological systems
the color could be quite wide. Nothing that nature does, tends
to be laser-sharp. If you want laser-sharpness, you want
crystallographic quality samples.

As you know, Rabid, in Canada, we were falling behind on sample
processing, so any process efficiencies that can be added at
a modest price, improve how many thousand samples can be run
in one lab, per day. Some people were staying in quarantine
for almost the entire two weeks, before their test results
came back. That wasn't the intention at the time. It was supposed
to come back in two or three days.

I'd already seen a warning in the news, maybe three weeks or a
month ago, that we had *no* delta reagent, and at the time,
were "flying blind" if a person showed up with delta. We still
have the sewer system surveillance though, so at least at
some level, we would know whether delta was in town or not.

There was even one educational facility, that was testing
its own sewage, so it would know when there was an issue
in the dorm :-) Which I thought was cool. Most places, they
only do this at city-level. One problem with sewage testing,
is compensating for storm-water dilution (few sewage systems
have the sources of water that well separated). If they test
the sewer on a given day, and there happened to be a thunderstorm
and a dump of water, then they have to figure out how much
of the water in the sewer is storm water and not human sewage,
to compute the number of cases of COVID in town properly.

If you've ever been to a pathology lab, they are heavily into
automation and automatic sample processing. You might see a tray
with a hundred cuvettes in it, rotating and feeding some gadget.
Maybe fifty years ago, some dude was pouring stuff into test
tubes, one at a time, with all the potential for errors
that come with humans sick of doing the same test every day :-)

You're forgetting that masks are also psychological.
When I'm wearing a mask, not only am I wearing a mask,
I'm also staying six feet from you.

In fact, at the grocery store this afternoon,
like trained pachyderms, everyone stays exactly
siz feed apart until a cash was available. We're still
wearing masks here, *all* of us. Once you get outside
the store, you can do anything you feel like.

At the hospital where I had my latest test done, it
says right on the sign at the entrance (where they
process you, check that you have an appointment),
that *clients are not to wear N95 masks*. The hospital
provides a fresh mask, of the kind you despise, to
try to prevent surfaces contamination by people using
masks that are a year old :-) It you come in the door
with an N95, you take it off, not because of any
inherent property of the mask, but, because the
amount of handling (on either side of the fabric)
is an unknown. Then you're handling elevator buttons
and so on. And that's the stupid part of that hospital,
I would much rather take the stairs than the elevator.
I don't really want to ride in the elevators. Even the
protocol for riding the elevators is non-existent. They
should have had one person assigned there, to say things
like "three clients per car" or whatever.

booster shots are currently being researched. how often is not yet
known. tetanus, for example, is 10 years.

as for less side effects, that's always a plus, assuming the vaccine

the reality is that there isn't really much that works to treat covid
other than monoclonal antibodies, which needs to be given early.
