Most people don't know how Microsoft works (where I admit it's not
intuitive) when they can't install a legacy printer driver (ask me how I
know this).

Almost all the time someone can't install the correct printer drivers, it's
really just that they don't know Windows well enough to get the job done.

As an example, I have the HP Laserjet 2100tn which HP long ago stopped
posting the drivers for, where Windows 10 also doesn't have the drivers, and
neither does the special "printer update" method of Windows 10 printer
installation menus.

However, the Microsoft Catalog has the drivers so there's no problem for
people who know how Windows 10 works (Jonathan Little has the same printer).

The point is that I don't offhand know of _any_ printer driver which isn't
in the Microsoft Catalog (they could certainly exist) but what I do know is
most (if not all the anecdotal complaints I hear, such as the ones from
RabidHussar are usually due to not understanding how Windows works.

If you need the tutorial, I wrote it (as you're well aware).

Just do a groups.google.com search of the archived Windows 10 group and
you'll find it using the keywords "tutorial hp laserjet 2100."

*The fact remains there is _zero_ app functionality on iOS not on Android.*

The reason is quite simple:
a. The _market_ determines the app functionality (not the OEM!).
b. Apple drastically limits what the market can provide; Google can't.

This is well known to anyone who _understands_ the operating systems.
But what's not well known is _why_ iOS users are so oblivious to facts.

Notice nospam has no defense to facts as he gets increasingly desperate to
find a way to deflect the fact *the iPhone is crippled in functionality.*

nospam can't find even _1_ app functionality on iOS not already on Android.

The adults on this newsgroup should be aware that nospam has only 7 basic
responses to facts he _hates_ about Apple, where he's 100% predictable.

1. nospam will first brazenly call every fact he hates "false" or "lies";
2. nospam will fabricate that the imaginary functionality actually exists;
3. nospam blames everyone else but Apple for the missing capability;
4. nospam fabricates that he told you how many times - you just missed it;
5. nospam says you should write your own apps if you want functionality;
6. nospam accuses you of being too stupid to write all your own iOS apps;
7. nospam resorts to an infinity of "ftfy" & ad hominem attacks.

See #4 response below from nospam as he becomes increasingly desperate to
defend everything about Apple (to the death!) that he _hates_ is a fact.

1. nospam will first brazenly call every fact he hates "false" or "lies";
2. nospam will fabricate that the imaginary functionality actually exists;
3. nospam blames everyone else but Apple for the missing capability;
4. nospam fabricates that he told you already even though he never did;
5. nospam says you should write your own apps if you want functionality;
6. nospam accuses you of being too stupid to write all your own iOS apps;
7. nospam finally resorts to an infinity of "ftfy" & ad hominem attacks.

Just watch.

Adults will notice the iOS users like Lewis have no adult response to facts.

That's likely fundamentally the _difference_ between the operating systems.
The iOS owner _believes_ in the fabricated imaginary OS Apple feeds them.

The iOS owner is _desperate_ to believe the soothing words in Apple ads.
"Al-u-min-i-um!" (Scroll to the end of https://youtu.be/oJZuSVl5wjM)

And yet...
*The fact remains there is _zero_ app functionality on iOS not on Android.*

The reason is logical:
a. The _market_ determines the app functionality (not the OEM).
b. Apple drastically limits what apps the market can provide; Google can't.

The fact remains there is _zero_ app functionality on iOS not on Android.

The reason is logical:
a. The _market_ determines the app functionality (not the OEM).
b. Apple drastically limits what apps the market can provide; Google can't.

Wow, that's rude. I know exactly how Windows works; it simply wasn't in
the Microsoft catalog as you suggest.

I have a legacy HP USB laserjet all-in-one printer hooked to a
no-longer-networked WinXP and I also have a legacy HP Ethernet laserjet
printer hooked to the router where I do exactly that.

Both the WinXP machine and the printers are on separate 120VAC switchable
extensions such that they're always powered off until I need to print to
paper or to scan to a PDF.

The warmup time of the printers is mere seconds, but what's more interesting
is that WinXP boots up shockingly fast compared to the time for Windows 10.

Surprisingly, that 1/2MB RAM WinXP box works just fine even after all these
years, although I removed the Ethernet cable years ago for security so it
can only print to the USB laserjet all-in-one printer/fax beast.

The good news is if you know how Windows 10 works, you can install the
legacy printer drivers even as they're no longer on the HP web site, and
they're no longer supplied with Windows 10, and they're not even in the
Windows 10 printer update troubleshooting sequence.

But they're in the windows catalog.

I have no issues with my printer since it's a recent one. I replace them
when they essentially die, usually from the barrel being clogged or
whatever (they were $100 or so to begin with so replacing them doesn't
bother me). I only had issues with a flatbed scanner which I was too
stubborn to replace because I hardly ever used it. I could get it
working in XP, Vista and 7 but after those operating systems, it would
only work in Linux since support for it was in the kernel.

both are fully supported in windows without needing to update it using
third party scanner software.

no reason why it would be any different. the scanner software doesn't
care how the scanner is connected. put the item on the scanner or in
its document feeder, click scan, wait for results.

yes there very definitely is.

an external d/a often has much better specs than what's internal, in
particular higher bit depths and sampling rates.

there is no hassle whatsoever. wired headphones plug directly into the
phone without any adapter, just as it did before. the only difference
is that the connector has changed and is also *much* more reliable.

no, you don't, since people bring their own entertainment on their
phone or tablet, which unlike what might be offered on the flight, is
exactly what they're interested in listening to or watching.

it does. sms filters out and insults anyone who tells him he's wrong,
but at least other people see the numerous corrections from multiple
sources.

sms also falsely claims that people don't post links to refute him.
that claim is also wrong. many people post numerous links which refute
him, which he is fully aware of and ignores that too.

he thinks he knows more about apple and their products than those who
have been using apple products for years. he does not. he even made the
ridiculous claim that he has more experience with apple than anyone in
the apple newsgroups.

it's as if he goes out of his way to say the most absurd and easily
disproven stuff possible.

one of the more bizarre examples is his ridiculous claim that face id
needs room light to work. it's laughably wrong and he knows it. it
doesn't even make any sense.

face id has its own infrared light source and dot projector, which
works *better* in the dark, the very opposite of his claim. anyone who
has ever used face id at all knows that needing to turn on a room light
for face id to work is laughably wrong.

although he refuses to correct anything, at least others can see that
he is consistently wrong and full of shit.

Not quite true.

There are some iOS-only apps, from Apple, like Garage Band and Apple
News, and some iPadOS apps not available for Android tablets, like
iLegislate <https://apps.apple.com/us/app/ilegislate/id407848601>. I'm
sure there are others. I'm talking about apps for which there is no
equivalent app for Android, not where an Android app with similar
functionality is available (often under a different name from the same
publisher).

There's also a significant difference in the capabilities of Apple
Wallet versus Google Pay, and not withstanding the issue of California
digital Covid-19 vaccination cards, Apple Pay has more functionality,
and Google Pay is screwed up, see "Google Pay team reportedly in major
upheaval after botched app revamp" at
<https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2021/08/google-pay-team-reportedly-in-major-upheaval-after-botched-app-revamp/>.
When I upgraded Google Pay, it deleted all my saved cards (only two) but
adding back one of my credit cards was a major ordeal with the issuing bank.

Some things about Apple Pay and Google Pay:

1. This morning I discovered that <https://www.recreation.gov> gives you
the option to store tickets that you purchase in Apple Wallet, but not
in Google Pay. With Android you can of course store a photo of your
ticket with the QR code, but you can't load it into Google Pay.

2. A couple of years ago, when I went to a San Jose Sharks game, I could
not get the ticket that was sent to me to store in Google Pay even
though it was supposed to work, but I was able to store it on my iPhone
in Apple Wallet with no problem. Apple Wallet just works better

3, Tickets sent to me for events at Apple, like the new product events
at Steve Jobs Theater, of course were Apple Wallet only (I felt terrible
about disappointing Tim, two years in a row, by not showing up, but I
was out of the country on September 10th 2019, and out of town on
September 12, 2018, but at least I was able to attend the open house on
December 14th, 2019, just before the world went crazy, and I stored my
ticket in Apple Wallet).

4. Apple appears to have beaten Google Pay to the punch in the ability
to store digital driver's licenses (announced yesterday)
<https://www.apple.com/newsroom/2021/09/apple-announces-first-states-to-adopt-drivers-licenses-and-state-ids-in-wallet/>.

It is true that there are lot of applications that are not possible on
iOS, either because of limitations put in place by Apple on iOS and
iPadOS or because the devices lack the necessary hardware necessary to
support the application.

On the hardware side, not even all Android phones have all the hardware
needed for certain apps. For example ANT support is limited in Android,
most Samsung phones support it, and a few HTC and other brands have it
in some of their products, see
<https://www.thisisant.com/directory/filter/~/60/~/>. For MST, only
certain Samsung phones support it, see
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samsung_Pay#Galaxy_S>.

Also on the hardware side, all iPhones since the 8 support wireless
charging, but many low-end Android phones lack Qi charging. Many Android
phones, including many new releases still have a headphone jack
<https://youtu.be/oJZuSVl5wjM>.

The most comprehensive list of feature differences is in a shared Google
Docs document I compiled entitled: "28 iOS Features Some of Which [many]
Android Users Wish they Had & 112 Android Features Some of Which [many]
iOS Users Wish they Had." See:
<https://docs.google.com/document/d/1JznrWfGJDA8CYVfjSnPTwfVy8-gAC0kPyaApuJTcUNE>.
It contains extensive cites and references for each item.

A scanner, not a printer. Annoying for Microsoft or HP to drop support
for a not very ancient device beginning with Windows 7.

I don't expect support for my 1980's old daisywheel printer, but it
would be nice to have had support for the scanner which I believe that I
bought about five years before Windows 7 came out.

In the areas with no mobile coverage you also probably have no FM radio
stations available either.

Occasionally I've driven through areas with no mobile coverage, and I
use a GPS app that stores the maps on the phone (OSMAND, CoPilot, etc.).
Of course you have to plan ahead and download the appropriate maps for
where you're traveling. Other times I've been out of the country with
expensive roaming or prepaid data and have avoided using Google Maps and
the offline mapping programs are good.

For music, I just rip my CDs to MP3s and store them on the phone.

Generally true, but in 'unpopulated' areas, FM often travels further
than 'cellular'. And FM transmitters are generally more powerful, are
often on high ground (if possible), etc..

Anyway, the sub-thread was about car radios, which normally also have
AM and long-wave, so ... :-)

Yep. I use OsmAnd, Sygic and 'HERE We Go' with offline maps.

I rip *other* people's CDs and then put them in my CD player! :-)

Hi Steve,
I was responding to the other guy who was trying to bullshit all of us.
(He's just a sock of someone in the Apple group as far as I can tell.)

Anyway, I wrote a complete step by step tutorial for finding the drivers for
legacy devices (and for archiving those which you may have already
installed).

If we look for Windows 10 "HP Scanjet 4200C" we "may" find them.
<https://www.google.com/search?q=Windows+10+printer+driver+HP+Scanjet+4200C>

I'm sure you expected this HP support information:
<https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c04635838>
Specifically this, from HP, on your scanner drivers:
<https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/hp-designjet-4200-scanner/298993>

I certainly wouldn't trust any non-HP non-M$ web site either:
<https://www.driversdownloader.com/hp-drivers/hp-scanjet-4200c-scanner>
<https://driversol.com/drivers/cameras-scanners/hp/hewlett-packard-scanjet-4200c>
<http://semantic.gs/hewlett_packard_scanjet_4200c_driver_download>
<https://www.hpdriversfree.com/download-hp/hp-scanjet-4200c-scanner-drivers-for-windows>
<https://www.driverguide.com/driver/detail.php?driverid=797510>
<http://hp.drivercan.com/scanners/scanjet-4200c-scanner/>
etc.

That leaves us with the Microsoft Catalog.
https://www.google.com/search?q=%22microsoft+catalog%22+%22Windows+10+printer+driver%22+%22HP+Scanjet+4200C%22
Specifically with:
<https://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Home.aspx>

The M$ search engine sucks, as you likely know.
<https://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=HP%20Scanjet%204200C>

Where you have to play silly "where's waldo" games with it:
<https://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=4200>
Which shows Laserjet 4200 & OfficeJet 4200 series printers.
<https://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=hp%204200>

I only looked at the first of something like a hundred pages, where on that
first page I didn't see a 4200 scanner but there were plenty of printers
and "other hardware" drivers for the HP 4200 series devices.
<https://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/ScopedViewInline.aspx?updateid=e0ac8770-c8a3-4031-9d21-4c4423187ea6>

As anyone (like Paul) who has ever done this knows, it's hit or miss if you
don't have EXACTLY the right model designation so I didn't scroll past the
first of 28 pages in that last link (as you know the full model number).

Of course, once you get the correct cab file, then the fun begins.

sms <scharf.steven@geemail.com> asked

> Not quite true.

Hi Steve,

Below is an adult conversation, which the Apple zealots won't comprehend.
But you, being well educated & intelligent... you should handle the nuance.

You and I are talking about _different_ categories of "app functionality".
a. It exists ...
(versus)
b. It doesn't exist.

You're talking about app functionality that exists on both platforms.
(e.g., "news" apps or "audio" apps)
I'm talking about app functionality that doesn't exist on one platform.
(e.g., automatic call recorders or graphical wifi debuggers)

These are completely different things.
Please do not confuse them.

Your document could be a billion pages long if what you're going to do
(which is what you are doing) is claim that the apps that exist on one
platform are subjectively "better" than the apps that exist on the other.

Rest assured I'm talking about app functionality which is _impossible_.
Obtaining *wifi graphical debuggers* from the iOS app store is impossible.
Obtaining *cellular graphical debuggers* from the app store is impossible.
Obtaining *automatic call recorders* from the app store is impossible.
Obtaining a *FOSS secure tor browser* from the app store is impossible.
Obtaining *encryption container tools* from the app store is impossible.
Obtaining *system wide FOSS firewalls* from the app store is impossible.
Obtaining any *app launcher* from the app store is impossible.
Obtaining local *gps spoofing tools* from the app store is impossible.
Removing the account on an iPhone & having full functionality is impossible.
etcetera

> There are some iOS-only apps, from Apple, like Garage Band and Apple
> News, and some iPadOS apps not available for Android tablets, like
> iLegislate <https://apps.apple.com/us/app/ilegislate/id407848601>. I'm
> sure there are others. I'm talking about apps for which there is no
> equivalent app for Android, not where an Android app with similar
> functionality is available (often under a different name from the same
> publisher).

There must be a billion pages written in reviews of the apps for just _one_
platform, let alone the billion more pages of reviews comparing the apps
between platforms.

Even the _same_ app can be hugely different between platforms.

a. You're talking about app functionality that exists
b. I'm talking about app functionality that doesn't exist

Big difference.

While there's absolutely nothing wrong with what you're trying to
accomplish, and, in fact, there's a lot of value to be had in what you're
trying to accomplish, you're biting off a _different_ problem set.

a. You're talking about app functionality that exists on both platforms
b. I'm talking about app functionality that doesn't exist on iOS.
(there isn't _any_ app functionality on iOS not already on Android)

The reason is simple:
A. The _market_ determines what apps are written for both platforms
B. Apple severely limits what apps are available; Google can't.

If people do NOT understand this, then they don't understand the OS.

To the point of the SUBJECT of this thread, nospam has already claimed we're
liars and that it's false that there are no graphical wifi debuggers on the
iOS app store.

When challenged, he used a series of insults telling us how great he is at
coding but still, we haven't seen nospam name just one graphical debugger.

nospam even went so far as to claim Apple didn't prevent them even as others
such as Steve and Michael Logies provided cites showing that Apple did.

SO far, nospam has always failed the a 3-word adult test of bullshit:
(1) Name (2) just (3) one

We're still waiting for nospam to "name just one" app of what he claims
exists on the Apple App store (and which he has been claiming for years).

Remember the infamous Snit video on this very topic?
(HINT: Not one of the Apple zealots know what a decibel is!)

Snit video attempting to show iOS Wi-Fi signal strength over time
<https://youtu.be/7QaABa6DFIo>

Note even Frank Slootweg appears to have not looked at the Y axis!
(the incompetence of the people here on debugging is shocking)

Has there ever been a mobile phone that included an AM radio?

Since Apple forgot to include an FM radio in the iPhone, there used to
be a device to add an FM radio to an iPhone or iPod but it was for the
previous style 30 pin connector, see
<https://www.amazon.com/dp/B004TGSMMY>. There is no such device for
newer, Lightning-equipped, iPhones, that plays through the devices
speakers, but there once was some Lightning earbuds with an FM radio
built in <https://9to5mac.com/2018/10/30/fm-radio/>, I'd be surprised if
they sold more than a few of either of these products.

All you Apple zealots lie in your desperate defense of Apple.
You get away with it on the toy OS newsgroup because of stupidity.
But you won't get away with it on the adult OS newsgroups.

Fact is, remove the Apple ID and you lose app installation functionality.
Fact is, remove the Google ID and you lose nothing in app functionality.

Huge difference it is.

*It's better to have the choice of using them... than no choice at all.*

As with offline nav apps & gps spoofing apps, standard sd card slots,
standard aux jacks, the proper sized charger included in the box, huge 5AH
batteries, a 5G modem and an FM radio built into the phone...

My free 5G Samsung has _all_ of those choices on the phone...
(most of which is impossible on my half price 5G iOS iPhone).
