It might give them a good laugh if their critical faculties are

You read the book? If not, I'd say, your critical faculties are not
intact. It's easy to make fun of things you don't know, nor care to take
deeper look into.

Sure it's much easier not to think and just swallow what you are fed ...

I would more believe in the Greek saying ``Everything in moderation". I
like vegetables, I like meat, and keep changing they around. Visiting my
daughter No.2, and waiting for a mushroom to cook irritates me. There is
an area nearby where houses are trained and galloped on an artificial
gallop, and walked on an area around on a grassy area nearby, from now
till end september lovely mushrooms grow, natural, flavorsome.
Unfortunately I need a zimmer frame now.

A friend's wife rang me last night, he is losing his mind, and she was
lonely.

When I was young, we had no electricity, no running water, just
parrifin (sp?) lanterns.. Lamp lighting time in the valley?.. Yes, I
remember it, the soft light of the lantern, a couple of rabbits to be
wrapped in in clay and put to the rear of the fire. All we have now is
nothing.

Sorry, listening to that woman telling how they are going to lose their

1) Do you mean what we call "split ends" in North America? (This is a problem
women have with their hair, because they wear it long.) Of course agriculture -
not modern agriculture, but ancient agriculture - caused civilization, which caused
the invention of writing, without which we would not have had the Internet, so you
_can_ blame the Internet on agriculture.

2) From context, I had initially supposed that "The Vegetarian Myth" was a
book intended to present the notion that being vegetarian was a bad idea.

That makes sense, as vegans, at least, have trouble getting enough Vitamin B12
without supplements made using modern technology (bacterial cultures), and
while naturally vegetarian animals only need five amino acids, human beings need
eight which their bodies cannot make.

However, if modern agriculture is a bad thing, and we must do without it... then
most of us would *have* to become vegetarians, or at least we would all have to
drastically reduce our consumption of meat.

So the book appears to be written from... a mixed point of view.

He's probably right, but he's also about 20,000 years too late.

A pre-agricultural diet could feed maybe 1% of the people currently
alive, so there's the detail of killing off the other 99% before we
can return to hunter-gatherer arcadia.

He said _modern_ agriculture, so that doesn't exclude tilling the soil,
it just excludes factory farms and antibiotics.

The main input to modern agriculture is chemical fertilizer, made by
the very energy intensive Haber-Bosch process.

We can have an interesting debate about whether the cost of growing
vast amounts of chemically fertilized corn and soybeans and feeding it
to cattle in feed lots and pigs and chickens in CAFOs is worth the
benefit in cheap meat, but it's a lot more complicated than "don't
use so many antibiotics." (Although I happen to agree that meat
production uses way, way too many of them.)

Without cooked meat, the human brain doesn't develop. Various studies
were done on cave people. Fire and cooked meat led to increased brain
sizes.

I grew up in a part of the US where the electrical grid isn't well
kept up. When it clouded up, my grandmother would get out the
kerosene, she called it coal oil, lamps so we would have light.

In the later part of the Great Depression, my mother, she was eary
teens at the time, wold hunt squirells and other small game to
suppliment their chickens. They had the chickens for meat and eggs.
And a cow for milk.

A lot of cattle feed is not from cereals, but from by-products, maize
gluten, cotton seed, and such. it gets very confusing after a while.

The first program I ever wrote to be sold commercially was a cattle
feed calculator running on an original 4K TRS-80 with cassette storage. All
it did was take a table of feeds with costs and various nutritional values
and work out the totals for a given mix. Of course with that little storage
and cassettes that meant one program to prepare a tape with the table and
another to take the proposed mix, read the tape and do the sums. But for
the farmer who commissioned it (with 500 head of cattle he was apparently
the largest in the area) it turned a monthly ordeal of three long days flat
out with a calculator into a couple of hours mostly spent thinking.

Several of his feed options were breakfast cereal waste, he said
I'd be amazed how cheap sugar puffs were by the tonne.

I have started to eat sugar puffs now I am confined to a chair a lot of
the time, they fill you up.

There is a difference in animal diets between pigs, on one side, and
sheep and cattle on the other, that can chew their cud, and more
efficently use rough feed. Pigs, I must concede, are rivals to humans in
using high quality cereals. There was a theory a while ago that the
reason that people like pig meat is because it tastes like human meat,
from the time that cannibalism was popular. may be the reason that it is
forbidden by jews and muslims.

I think it more likely to be that pigs and humans have a fair
number of parasites in common and when you live in a hot country with no
form of refrigeration eating pig meat is a good way to get ill. Practical
advice for desert nomads.

Similarly circumcision is pure practicality for desert nomads,
there are places you *really* don't want to get sand sores.
