Today I did 1+ fucking mile at 10 degree elevation on my
treadmill (*).

Speed? I just got back from the gym. I do the cardio workout, knocking 10
or 15 years off my age to get a decent target heart rate. The treadmill
made it to 15 degrees to get my blood flowing before settling back to the
9-10 degree range. I did 1.5 miles.

I have a membership at Planet Fitness, $10 / month. They have a lot of
treadmills. And stair steppers, stationary bikes, ellipticals*, rowing
machine, free weights, and machines. Your $800 would pay for 80 months and
you wouldn't have to worry about treadmill repairs. The deal breaker might
be you would have to get out of your basement.

* I hate those damn things. Two minutes and my knees, hips, and thighs
ache. I must be doing something wrong.

The last will fit in with the cool down period.

My worst mistake was Free Bird. If you're on a statioanry bike you tend
to follow the tempo. It starts at about 70 BPM for a leisurely pedal and
leaves you in a pool of sweat.

I've been averaging a solid 20 miles/week running this Winter,
fortunately almost all outdoors, due to the mild weather. The recent
cold snap had me driving to the gym to run on their track. Other than
that, there's just my daily pushups and pullups.

I've never been a runner but I usually get in 10-20 miles a week in
mountainous terrain. At -20 below I wasn't ambitious enough to drive
anywhere and then it segued into a week of light duty after an eye
operation. Time to get back to work. That 15 degrees on the treadmill
doesn't even come close to the trails around here.

I gave up pullups a while back. The muscles were willing but the joints
and tendons weren't happy. The gym has pulldown and assisted pullup
machines so I can control it better than body weight.

I do not run much anymore, just 30 to 45 minutes every few days. Years of
pavement-pounding running, torquing my joints on the soccer field, and heavy
training classes got me a nice set of hip replacements. So I do a lot of bike
riding. Also got my head pounded in soccer (hits in the face, kicked in
the head while playing keeper) and I now have three plates in my neck.

Apart from biking and walking, I go to a gym fairly often. Still a little
overweight though, a bloaty face like Carson Daly :-D

One thing I have never enjoyed is working out with earphones. Instead,
usually I will think of a tune and it becomes an earworm.

There is a Blackfeet family name that describes me, 'Heavy Runner'. I
still have my OEM knees and hips thanks to avoiding it. I do have a gamma
nail in one hip from a fracture but the joint itself still works.

When I was in the college outing club some would run down mountains
skipping from rock to rock while I plodded. I'm still going but i'm not
sure about some of them.

My gym is similar. They cut their fees last year, so my ROI vs one $800 treadmill
went from 4 years to over ten years. Granted, I doubt that this low price will last
for a decade, but for as long as it does, the $800 can stay in the bank at 5% and
earn $40/year, which makes the gym 'free' by this metric.

balance there for seeking out times the gym is empty when CoVid rates spike..

I don't use it but the Planet Fitness app shows how many people are
currently at the gym. Even with the New Years Resolution crowd I've never
had a problem. There are only 4 stair steppers but I never counted the
treadmills. A lot. Same with ellipticals and bikes.

The Smith machines can be busy but I'm not fond of them. They are fine for
bench presses but they feel wrong for dead lifts.

I don't know about their business model but it seems to work. The mom &
pop gym I went to for years was quite a bit more expensive and was mostly
free weights with one treadmill and a couple of bikes. Covid killed that
one although I'd switched prior to covid. It was across town where PF is
around the corner from where I work so I have fewer excuses.

I don’t recall what last January was like; this year’s been light because
of other personal factors which have limited my ability to go.

I’m not personally familiar with Smith .. my gym has a bunch of Nautilus gear
in a side room that’s usually nearly empty…pretty much can go in and hit a dozen
different machines with zero waiting.

idk if the ones at PF are actually Nautilus. The idea goes back to Jack
LaLanne and was perfected by Smith.

That's the killer. If you're doing a press or squat the 7 degrees means
the bar is moving toward your head for a press which is the natural path.

For a dead lift the bar is either moving away from you or towards you if
you stand on the other side. Towards you is a little better but it isn't
great.

No big deal. I'm not training for the geriatric strong man competition,
only trying to maintain. The dead lift was always my best one. I don't
have the ROM in my right arm to do a back squat. I have long arms and you
really should have alligator arms to be good at the bench press.

The gas isn't much of a factor. The grocery store, CostCo, Lowes, Home
Depot, Best Buy, the gas station, and a bunch of other stuff are all along
the same street and it's the first thing I hit going into town.

for its not only cheap, but helps make such visits infrequent.

I actually bought that brand, the couple of times I experimented with
getting drunk from wine. Only other kind I've purchased was Trader
Joe's two-buck chuck, which was a lot like grape juice. But I
certainly believe there are better brands, out there.

I was also not being phobic, but was having fun with how it’s a common
stereotype that they often have better taste/pallet/etc than ‘Normies’.
