Tax time is soon upon us and FOSS has the spreadsheet:

https://sites.google.com/view/incometaxspreadsheet/home/instructions

Although written in Microslop Excel (yech!) it works flawlessly in LibreOffice (see instuctions).

I do my taxes effortlessly each year with this LibreOffice spreadsheet.

So why not do yours with same?

Unless you are a deluded simpleteon there is no reason to not use it.

So FOSS does NOT have a tax spreadsheet, and the mighty Linux Lord Master
admits to using Excel.

Yeah, I would not trust a FOSS program (or a FOSS programmer) to do my taxes
either.
Congratulations! You DO have some sense after all.

Mint's LO failed to open it, dude. I can't believe there's something
wrong with the most popular distro's included-on-installation app.

Just install a VM of Winblows for free, and run TurboTax. Simple as
fuck. There's nothing stopping me from running a VM of Win10 or 11,
except not caring in the slightest to use my RAM and CPU for that,
that's the whole reason I installed Linux to begin with. I like using
Wine *better* than Winblows!

For all the dimbulbs with their dimbulb distros, I have graciously
posted a LibreOffice ods format of this spreadsheet. Find it at:

alt.binaries.multimedia.transformation

<pan$b3b54$f4f9e166$60b73c4c$76a19ea0@linux.rocks>

You are welcome.

I hope that the dimbulbs can actually download attachments from
Usenet. For them, and their dimbulb distros, it must be a monumental
task.

You couldn't reply to my reply, "dimbulb"? You have to pretend some
abstract person(s) replied? Of course Agent 8 can download your
binary post, dummy, I'll jump to it right now. Ah, and the same error
message in LO. So, you're a fucking moron, or something.

Although, an addendum, Agent running within Wine just crashed, I had
copied and pasted my reply text previous to this sentence into xed
when I saw signs of a problem, and then when I clicked back here Agent
crashed, and I had to kill the process in System Monitor to completely
exit it, and be able to re-launch it. Second time it's crashed under
Wine, since switching to Linux. But still better than Pan or
Thunderbird.

"Or something" is correct.

Either you are a totally incompetent weasel or that shit distro is FUBAR.

I would guess that it's both.

It works great on my REAL distro with real LO.

Well, I confess, you win, I installed the generic .debs and it loaded
the M$ file from your first link, I presume your alt.binaries.* post
would load too. Nevertheless, would it not seem easier to use
Winblows in a VM, and run TurboTax?

What my experience actually tells us, is that the file reflects using
M$ software that LO had not caught up to in the version Mint releases.
It had in the libreoffice.org .debs. Blaming Mint only applies in
that they're using an old build. Not that there's something wrong
with that build. M$ is clearly deliberately trying to outpace the
competition's ability to interoperate with their documents.

That's a really odd error message.

Current versions of LibreOffice and Excel have 16384 columns, so I doubt
very seriously the LO column limits have been exceeded.

It opened slowly but apparently fine for me in LO 7.4.7.2 Windows.

Excel and tax work has been berry, berry good to him:

That's because it contains nothing but formulas and cell formats:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
"FAQ: Is this spreadsheet safe to use?
This spreadsheet is constructed using only cell equations and
formatting. No macros or other 'code' are used."
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

If it had ANY VBA code at all, I would NEVER trust it to the LibreOffice
monstrosity.

> I do my taxes effortlessly each year with this LibreOffice spreadsheet.

It's NOT an LO spreadsheet, and it's not FOSS either. It has no license.

It's a superior Excel sheet, built by a dedicated Excel user. No FOSS
crapware developer could build such a nice tax tool.

It has ~30 tax forms. I'd estimate 3-4 months full-time to build it,
most of that time dedicated to formatting and alignment. Very tedious work.

He's made them available since the late 90s, according to a comment I
read on a video.

> So why not do yours with same?
>
> Unless you are a deluded simpleteon there is no reason to not use it.

It's nice, but the free of cost, guided tax packages like TurboTax and
TaxAct are easier, and take care of the majority of users needs.

Flaming faggot Joel Crump should consider uninstalling the system
version of LibreOffice in favour of the Flatpak version. The system
version is older and many bugs were fixed with the latest version.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Standardization_of_Office_Open_XML

Microsoft corrupted many members of ISO in order to win approval for its
phony 'open' document format, OOXML. This was so governments that keep
their documents in a Microsoft-only format can pretend that they are using
'open standards.' The government of South Africa has filed an appeal
against the decision, citing the irregularities in the process.
-- Richard Stallman

That article details how Microsoft rammed a 6500-page "specification" for its
Word format through ISO committies in various countries. ODF's OOXML
specification ran about 870 pages.

I don't believe Microsoft ever kept to their own standard after getting it
accepted.

Not sure what the status is today, except that Microsoft touts its ISO 22301
"unmatched business compliance".

I said clearly that the current release of LO worked. That was why I
gave that a try. But how am I supposed to know Russell had any kind
of a point, when he spews about Mint all the time? You notice how he
tried to blame me for doing something wrong, as if opening a document
with an app he knows I have is difficult, he could've suggested making
sure one has an up to date edition of LO in his OP, I would've thought
sooner to try that if he had.

My point above exactly. Even Farley Fucktard uses Excel for his taxes.

It is to laugh.

Whatever.

This spreadsheet does nothing more than automate all the tedious calculations.
One just has to gather all the relevant documents and then copy the numbers
into the appropriate forms/schedules. All calculations are then performed and
there is nothing else to do but print and mail the completed 1040.

Yes, I still use paper mail. I will never submit electronic docs through these
commercial services even if it is free. Until the IRS allows direct uploads from
my machine to their machine I will use the paper mail.

This spreadsheet, however, represents something that the IRS should have provided
to the taxpayer 30 years ago, and they probably would have if not for the lobbying
efforts of the commercial tax services.

I still have to do all the calculations for my state income taxes. The state tax authorities
distribute PDF forms and these PDF forms (using javascript!) could easily perform the
calculations automatically but they do not. This has to the pinnacle of digital backwardness.

When are these government jackasses going to get into the modern world? They are 30-50
fucking years behind the times. I should be able to copy the numbers from the docs, click
a button and have everything done and uploaded from my machine to theirs in mere milliseconds.
But instead I have to step back in time to the 1950's with pencil and paper.. It's nuts!

Yet full automation would necessitate FREE AND OPEN DOCUMENT STANDARDS, and that
is something that those technically illiterate bastards could never comprehend.

The online service I use is free for the Feds and $29 iirc for the state.
It's worth it to me. If nothing else it saves me dealing with the printer.
It's an old Samsung color laser that needs some serious maintenance. About
the only thing I ever printed was tax forms so it's been ignored for
years.

Spreadsheets tend to be somewhat error-prone for that.

Excel is a great tool. As far as my limited use of Microsoft products is
concerned, it is the best tool that Microsoft has created. I don't
understand what's your beef with it.

You won't believe what I could do with it. The only major shortcoming it
had in the earlier versions was its sheet rows number limit, a
ridiculous relic from times long gone when it was used only for baby
problems. But later versions extended that number to more realistic
sizes, avoiding the silly complications one had to deal with in using
multiple sheets for a single list!

I think VBA became an industry language only after such extensions were
made. Well, as far as management programs are concerned. For industry
issues involving the need for computation speed, VBA isn't even there.
And neither is any other similar products (as far as I know.)

What for? I have no tedious calculation to do. I have only to declare
what isn't provided by my employer.

It looks difficult. Are you that late in the US?

For tax declaration? Looks very old school to me.

They don't or you don't know how to do it? You look late in the US.

No, they should have provided you a better way to declare taxes.

> I still have to do all the calculations for my state income taxes.

It look like you are very late in the US. I'm surprised. I thought you
were advanced but it looks like you are not.

They could use a real modern website instead. It would be at the same
time more easier and less prone for errors.

> When are these government jackasses going to get into the modern world?

With your advices? Never.

> They are 30-50 fucking years behind the times.

Agreed on this. But only if it's not because you are unable to use their
modern services.

Are you that late in the US are is it only you being unable to stay
updated?

Do you have to or is it the only way you know?

> It's nuts!

Yep.

> Yet full automation would necessitate FREE AND OPEN DOCUMENT STANDARDS,

It would be a good idea, but it's not needed. You just have to use a
website for your own declaration and a company should only need a REST API.
