In another message you were saying that people really using their
hardware were using Windows. Don't you see any incompatibility with this
paragraph?

With the cloud, you can do a lot with a browser. So you can have servers
running on Linux when you are actually using the computer provided by
your company. And when your company provides only Windows Desktops you
can still work with Linux.

> Just tinkertoy playtime in the evenings and weekends.

In evenings and week-ends you can do a lot more than just tinkertoy.
Agreed, on evenings and week-end you can't do as much as what you do on
full time payed. But still, you can use Linux for real.

You believe that my mother, who does nothing except sit on Facebook and
send us annoying e-mails, is "really using her hardware?"

Because you're installing "crapware like" Hyper-V. Trust me, I
installed WSL 2 to say I did, the GUI support is a dog.

That's just a silly statement.

My personal interests are in machine learning, particularly as applicable
to edge devices like ARM microprocessors. Linux is perfectly capable of
running PyTorch. For that matter since .NET works on Linux I can use VS
Code with Torch.NET, TensorFlow.NET or Microsoft's ML.NET.

For that matter if I am working on a GIS problem at work, I can continue
at home using QGIS and the related libraries.

What I do at home is more limited by my personal energy levels as the
technology. I'm not a 20-something that can live on Jolt and cold pizza
anymore.

While I am not the biggest fan of VMs most of the Windows Server instances
in house and on our client sites are running in VMs and the whole cloud
thing is based on VMs. In some cases Linux and kvm is the base layer.

My problem with VMs is I/O. You can virtualize a NIC and so forth but
there is no magic and there is the potential for noisy neighbors.

I find nothing wrong with the VM by themselves on Linux (ie: kvm +
QEMU). But he was speaking of VM on Windows. And I see nothing wrong
with the fact that WSL is a VM. But I'm not an expert on Microsoft
products, so maybe there is something about it don't know.

It's not only a technical issue. One is not Free, the other is owned by
Oracle. And if you don't find any issue with the licence for VirtualBox,
remember that Oracle changes the rule of the game in the middle of it.
And when your company is fully compromised with VirtualBox, the day
Oracle changes the licence, it will be hard.

Yes.

My wife's company hosts some of their data on GCP, which is Google Cloud
Platform and probably runs on Linux. I don't know what the actual
database servers are (BigQuery maybe), but she does a fair amount of
work inside GCP web apps, working with big data. Her laptop runs
Windows, and she prepares and distributes analytical results, charts and
tables with MS Excel.

play with blue themes for an hour
swap out your desktop environment 3x but go back to xfce
increase the taskbar height then decide you liked it where it was
change the clock display format 8x but go back to the original
thicken the window borders by 1/2mm
try 8 different fonts for your terminal
use ls with 22 different switches for an hour

"Linux is the best!"

Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha!

Believe it or not, such chicken-shit activity constitutes
his entire life's work.

Can there be a more pathetic joke?

Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha!

Lucky you have Windows games to keep you company on Linux, eh?

And forgive my misspeak: ls has 60 switches you can tinkertoy with.

I saw a lot of rice desktop images which, for me, have been done by
people you describe. The heavy impressive images show beautiful desktop
which have need hours to configure, and are, clearly, unusable. But it's
not the only way to use Linux.

It's like saying the only purpose of Windows is to play because you know
people who use their computer only to launch games.

For the most part I use what comes out of the box. The only configuration
I have done in recent history was on Windows 11. I moved the taskbar icons
back to the left where they used to be and restored the full right click
on a file menu. I don't count setting up multiple desktops as
configuration although I suppose it is.

When I set up a new computer with Linux Mint, it takes me about five minutes
to customize the desktop the way I like it. Done in about the time it takes
Windows to boot up and stop doing whatever it does in the background that
doesn't allow you to get on the Internet.

DFS is clueless.

What little I've used Windows 11, I've also set it up to move the taskbar
icons to the left. I didn't know you could restore the right click menu, but
I knew I didn't like the way it works now. I'll have to look into changing
that.

I spent a little time setting up WSL in Windows 11 yesterday and installing
some of my favorite Linux applications (went with Debian). It's kind of like
a Chromebook, you can run Debian on them also, but why deal with ChromeOS
when you just install Linux itself and be done with it. Ditto with Windows,
waste of good space (unless you absolutely need something that runs in
Windows).

It's a registry hack. Some sites have a .reg file to automate the process
but it's easy enough with regedit.

It's completely obsolete now but I have a book of registry hacks. You
could turn on all sorts of things. Like this one most of them weren't
just setting a default in an existing key. You had to create the key,
which meant you had to know it even existed.

It was like Windows 2000 that would do tab completion in the terminal but
you had to turn it on.

That did it, thanks. So much "easier" to enter random numbers and letters in
the Registry Editor than to customize Linux. :)

Yeah, GUIDs just roll off the lips. I'm surprised they didn't make that an
option in one of the configuration dialogs. That 'More Options' tab is
lame.

I configured a lot of things to my taste and usage. But I did it a long
time ago. And I'm adding shortcuts only when needed. Globally, for the
style, I started from the theme which I preferred and changed some
things about it. For the shortcuts, I did the most useful one at the
beginning. And now and there, when there is something I do often, I
create a new shortcut/alias.

I manage my dotfiles with gitlab. So it's very fast and easy for me to get my
configuration back in a new context.

Er, um...

Well, 'Lolicon' is a subset of the Anime/Manga genre, which even if many Americans
are clueless of the media, from a broader worldwide perspective isn't obscure..think
that I'd read someplace that Japan is #3, behind the USA (#1) and India (#2).

One can see it as having parallels to US media, between what used to be Saturday
morning cartoons (which became increasingly commercialized) & the Marvel/DC comic
book empires, which because of the increasing costs of printing, made the business
decision to write more for older adult readers instead of (pre)teens.

For this, its probably in what's known as "Shônen":

"Shônen is a demographic and a category of manga mostly aimed at boys between
10 and 18 years old. Shônen stories are idealised and feature action scenes depicting
adventure and/or sports, friendship and struggles with adversity. Similarly themed
stories with more advance plotlines, aimed at older males, is called seinen manga."

In any event, there's more genres that just the eight listed above: another one that's
apparently pretty common is "Isekai", which is reincarnation based meme/trope:
a modern day person gets hit by a truck & killed, then wakes up in a fantasy land/etc.

Unlike American comic books, they're published weekly in ~1" thick magazines,
on very cheap paper / ink ... the expectation is that this is for reading the story,
and a high quality 'graphic novel' will be purchased later. Here's an example of
one, the "Weekly Shonen" Magazine
