I pity those poor fools who are stuck, because of their incompetence and
stupidity, with Microslop Winblows and its built-in, unchageable, pale,
drab, and totally lifeless GUI. Yecch! It's enough to make any sane person
puke his guts.

A graphical user interface should be a joy to behold and to work within.
But this is not the case with Microslop's GUI.

Only on GNU/Linux, baby!

GNU/Linux offers excitement and total visual engagement with its GUI
offering. Behold just one fine example:

https://wiki.preterhuman.net/images/b/b5/600px-Stereo-gfx-2.png

Wow, oh Wow! Man, that is pure joy! Look at the vividness and depth. Look
at the rich, engaging detail. Look at the impactful color. That is how all GUIs
should be. Compared to Microslop's puky, insipid junk GNU/Linux is pure visual
heaven.

I believe that this is the Tk GUI toolkit, although it could also be XForms.

But sadly, even a lot of GNU/Linux users don't know what they're missing.
Both the GNOME and KDE GUIs (I believe, although I've never used either)
attempt to mimic the sickening Microslop junk. To get the REAL DEAL one
must roll ones own.

Check out these XForms possibilities (some of these may be a little off
but these are just a smattering of what is possible):

http://xforms-toolkit.org/screenshots/

Check out these this fantastic Motif GUI. Eat your feeble heart out,
Microslop!

http://toastytech.com/guis/openvms8controlpanel2.png

Then there is the incomparable TK:

https://tkdocs.com/images/themes.png

https://www.linuxjournal.com/files/linuxjournal.com/linuxjournal/articles/072/7225/7225f4.jpg

Nothing in that sick, bed-ridden Microslop universe can come close.

Only on GNU/Linux, baby!

Brother, if you ain't using GNU/Linux exclusively then you are seriously fucked
in the head.

Note: A big prize will be awarded to the first asshole who spews that
standard gibberish about "1990's" computing (or equivalent).

It can't get much more hideous.

You posted this idiocy early am from home, where you run Pan on Linux
for hobbyist stuff.

Later today you'll post from Pan on Windows, at your Windows job, where
you earn a living.

That's clearly from a very old system. The resolution is not even
flat-screen display grade.

That's an early 2000s KDE I think. Like 3.x.

Of the GUIs he showed, I'd say that's the best.

Most GUIs today are at least functional, though . I thought xfce was a
good tradeoff between looks and features. Hobbyist stuff like fluxbox,
openbox and blackbox (134 releases over 22 years and just now at version
0.77) are hard to get used to.

I missed very little from Winblows, using Linux for two years. Other
than the fact that Win10 was getting beta and worse "updates", all
that time, I didn't mind missing that. It's just astounding how
hardware-hungry Windows is, if you want to keep up to date (and
Windows 8.1 was the last version to stay supported without a major
feature update, some of which under Win10 have radically increased
demands on performance).

As someone who uses openbox, I'd still say that XFCE is a pretty good
desktop env. I don't really like the aesthetic of Gnome, but KDE is
pretty alright.

I find GNOME to be the best compromise of every one of the desktop
environments. KDE feels clunky, XFCE feels archaic, but GNOME is just right.

Gnome is hard to get used to with the Activity menu and such. I still
see it as a fine desktop env, but not something I would go for.

It was through GNOME that I discovered hot corners, something I now have
trouble living without. Even in Windows where such a feature doesn't
exist without a third-party utility, I've set up the scroll wheel to act
like the top-left hot corner simply because it allows me to navigate
applications so much more easily. Workspaces have existed for a long
time, but the way GNOME implements them makes them feel a lot more
useful than they would otherwise be. The fact that the interface can
infinitely be modified through the extensions helps quite a bit as well.
On the other hand, part of my gripe with GNOME is from the extensions as
well in that they usually either don't work, don't work well or don't
work as expected. PopOS mostly remedies this by implementing most of
what you would want anyway by default, but it's a mess everywhere else.

I used openbox fairly extensively with Manjaro about 10 years ago. As I
recall it was too much manual work to keep it maintained and updated,
and install new features. You have to install the bottom panel
manually, correct? It's been a while.

I haven't used any of them in-depth for years, but I'm gonna check out
the latest xfce, which is 4.18, released Dec 2022. It does look a bit
archaic, but it's the desktop I spent the most time with overall.

I like that FOSS devs often make detailed changelogs available.
https://www.xfce.org/download/changelogs/4.18

Would be interesting to see Windows changelogs, but MS would never
release such details.

It's not too bad. I recommend tint2.

I used xfce4, highly recommend it if you just want to
set up a basic desktop that doesn't get in your way.

Recently had an issue. I applied an update to my System76 workstation,
which pulled in a new "version" of nvidia-525 that was actually version
535. Unfortunately, that video driver won't work with Starfield.

I had been meaning to install Linux Mint anyway, so I
put that on the second drive, then used "apt-mark hold" to hold on to
the 525 version of the nvidia drivers. Then alas, I had to enable
the System76 ppa to get support for the internal sound. I ended up
with a system with a Linux 5 kernel that I can boot and play Starfield
with the correct driver.

Result: I'm fine if I boot Linux 5, but if I boot Linux 6, the nvidia
driver doesn't work. That's okay, because it falls back to a vesa mode
that makes it apparent that I booted the wrong kernel.

BTW, NVidia has released a 537 version of their drivers for Windows that
solves the problem with Starfield. But Linux is a red-headed
stepchild -- no new NVidia driver for us yet.

That's what I was using in 2014.

* graphical login manager (SLiM)
* window manager (Openbox)
* compositing mgr (compton)
* panel (tint2panel)
* right-click menu (Obmenu generator using xml)
* wallpaper setter (Nitrogen using .png or .jpg)
* desktop system monitor (conky)

And you can switch any of them out for other alternatives when you
decide every other week "this button is 1/2 an inch too far to the right".

Do you actually do any work with your Linux/Openbox crapbox?

It gives you that ability. It seems you are tempted
to use it all the time.

Except for occasionally tweaks, such as adding a launcher,
I set my desktop and forget it. YMMV.

Why are you harping on desktop Linux from almost
a decade ago?

I have a critique, how your posting
might be improved:

1) get a bucket
2) fill it with water
3) go soak your head until you stop moving

Seriously though: You took a civil inquiry and turned
it into your own personal fit of personalities.

Seriously though: After all these years you don't know that "DFS" is

don't know that he gets-off on being an asshole? You don't know that
he deserves no civility?
