WINE has a lot of moving parts.

Of course it's not easy.

It would be easy if it had instructions.

I agree completely. I've never had a lot of success with Wine, ReactOS and
WABI. They always seem to have problems with missing pieces and also seem
to leave stuff lying all over the place.

On the other hand, VirtualBox is installed miles away from the /home
directory and the .VDIs can be placed anywhere in the FileTree and not
necessarily in the /home directory space either.

But the biggest advantage is that Windows works like Windows is meant to
work because it is in use as a single entity.

Regards,

Jack

Using an old link, I could not get the file, but at least it had a hash field
I could use to check in Virustotal.

sudo wget "http://www.dream-multimedia-tv.de/board/index.php?page=Attachment&attachmentID=8070&
h=890ecdc379efa5cc7eaa1e4305500c1a5922fe8b&
s=a26caeb1979169bf1dda24f2b63cf1bd6f243b34" -O dreamboxEDIT_without_setup_5.3.0.0.zip

Plug 890ecdc379efa5cc7eaa1e4305500c1a5922fe8b into the Search on Virustotal.com .
Then from there, the filelist for the ZIP has a link to dreamboxEDIT.exe analysis.

*******

dreamboxEDIT.exe 5.3.0.0 executable part of the ZIP. What a strange executable.

https://www.virustotal.com/gui/file/dcf548eb61aba450008bc87e33498bce37c68f22575b190d7e86e6cb0ea8e8d5/behavior

One part of the analysis, says it looks like an ActiveX plugin. But Internet Explorer
is bombsquad material on Windows, and if you try to use Internet Explorer now/today,
Microsoft kills it remotely. If the application actually relies on IExx
as a display or output, I would not expect that to work for very long.

If you put that in a VM, I think I'd keep it by itself, in a separate container file.

Do you really need a 6MB file to do a text editor on Windows ???
Notepad.exe is 352KB. It's 18 times the size of a text editor.

*******

For the audience, this is some of the history.

I had to google WABI, this is quite an old project, 16bit only; ReactOS
will never leave alpha stage, completely unstable; otoh Wine works quite
well with a lot of applications, I am writing this in Wine actually, but
when something is not stable in Wine a virtual machine is not a bad idea
although it needs considerably more hdd space, memory and cpu.

Running Mint 21.3.
Installed wine with:
sudo apt install --install-recommends winehq-stable
Works for me with all Windows stuff I have (not much, though).

My additional repositories has wine-hq as
deb https://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/ubuntu/ jammy main
and says it's in /etc/apt/sources.list.d/additional-repositories.list

And that's where and what was there. Never looked at the files personally, I just do the shell
commands and know they work.

You all haven't changed your software sources have you? Not that additional repositories would be
affected.

Same here (LM 21.3 Cinnamon).
No problems, so v. 6.0.3 is "a working wine" afaiac.

Do you have any idea how that deb line got there? It's a format that I
see in two other repositories that I use for Mega and Microsoft (for
Visual Studio Code), but the current instructions on Wine HQ refer to
another format, stored in a .sources file, which is not recognized by
the package sources application.

It works with apt though, and I wasn't aware of the difference until I
looked at the file, and wondered why it wasn't listed.

Nope. I have an install script but it's all flawed, for old 20.3

Well, that's part of the problem.

WINE is the "never-ending journey". There is no such
thing as a "I have done a complete and thorough test".

Because I can tell you haven't.

You can enter WINE. You can "have an adventure". You come
out the other side, either with broken WINE or working WINE.

Microsoft can create new gubbins, faster than you can detect
they've done that, and then you find a way of testing. Would
a Metro.App work ? Would a UWP work ? Would a ClickOnce work ?

It's the same sad situation I have with NTFS file systems.
Can anyone list all the files on an NTFS file system ?
No, they can't :-) Sorry. Try again.

I have this big bruise on my forehead, from trying
some of this stuff.

As an example, two utilities I have for listing the
contents of an NTFS volume, they differ by... oh... 100,000 files.
That is all. Not much when you think about it. Inspires confidence.

At one time, Microsoft had a couple files in the System32 folder,
which used an exotic UTF character set of some sort. A couple of
the characters in the filename string were "not representable"
and when pasted into Thunderbird (which is normally pretty good
about this stuff), you could not tell that a couple of characters
were missing from what you pasted. Now, the idiots did remove that
stuff a few months later, and the developer on acid is likely
locked in a broom closet.

*******

I've just come back from my adventure.

Summary:

1) Synaptic in good shape. Bravo. Selecting the "wine" metapackage
really does work. That's probably the first time I've seen that
in eight or ten years. Whoever did that, good work!

2) Winetricks has broken download refs in it. Microsoft is constantly
removing stuff from their server that should be left there.
Winetricks even resorted to archive.org references (which were also
missing), so you know some monkeys have been in a knife fight again.

To install .NET, I use 3.5.1SP1 (gives 2.0, 3.0, 3.5 versions).
Next, you should install .NET 4.0 , because the other dotNET offerings
are not really cumulative. When you go to install .NET 4.7.2 ,
the download ref is busted, so you instead just download
one of a similar name but different SHA256 and run
that using "wine" directly.

wine ./ndp472-kb4054530-x86-x64-allos-enu.exe

When it appears to be stuck, open a second terminal window,
and run "top". The action of running "top" seems to break
a deadlock somewhere, and the installer will then finish up.

I ran Aaron Stebners "netfx_setupverifier_new.zip" to check.

wine ./netfx_setupverifier.exe

and it passed as intended 2.0,3.0,3.5,4.0,4.7.2 . That would
cover a certain percentage of .NET applications, but not necessarily
all of them. .NET is up to 6 or higher now, and I didn't check
the Winetricks to see if it has caught up.

Since mscoree has JIT capability, the fact that the
mscoree scan of the file system does or does not complete,
is not supposed to matter. As an executable will cause
it to run "Just In Time" when you start the loader on the executable.
If you run "top", you can at least see the mscoree for dotnet
2.0,3.0,3.5 attempting to run.

This means I've tested about 5% of the attack surface.

I don't have enough games, to test that part of it.

Some further notes, I have a script, which looks like I selected specific lines from
https://wiki.winehq.org/Ubuntu

Yet... I don't have the "keys" that these 2 lines suggest.
sudo mkdir -pm755 /etc/apt/keyrings
sudo wget -O /etc/apt/keyrings/winehq-archive.key https://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/winehq.key

/etc/apt/keyrings has 2 keys but nothing to do with wine.

So I'm totally stumped. Ouch! Now how do I reload properly?!!! (don't answer).

The whole problem has to do with people (the Linux crowd) wrestling
computational science and art from the computer capitalists, if Bill
Gates et al developing computers for profit, as opposed to developing
computers for the greater benefits of the populations and societies. The
digital world belongs to everyone.

I have that. Just one file.

And my winehq-jammy.sources file says this:

Types: deb
URIs: https://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/ubuntu
Suites: jammy
Components: main
Architectures: amd64 i386
Signed-By: /etc/apt/keyrings/winehq-archive.key

And apparently, apt can work with that.
