I used it last year, just installed it from the repository: sudo apt
install wine; version should be 9.0.

I did, and it worked, just as it is currently working with Ubuntu, on
which my Agent is running on with Wine, this setup also worked with LM.

What exactly are you trying to install?
sudo apt install wine
should get you everything you need. There were no unmet dependencies
installing this on LM 21.2 last summer, I do not reckon distros change
that dramatically within a couple of months. I only switched to Ubuntu
for Wayland, which I needed for a couple of reasons; may be going back
to LM soon because it now offers it too.

BTW: Ignore that Y.... guy (Rüdiger Wähling), he has been in my killfile
for 20+ (!) years, for obvious reasons, starting from Fidonet.

I have a windows card game and version 9 completely destroyed the window and toolbar etc. Almost
makes it unusable, difficult at best to play and hit the undo/redo.

This what it should be: https://postimg.cc/PPtLZXc9
and this is what 9 did: https://postimg.cc/JyBtmGDD

I need it for "dreamboxedit" a tool for settings in a Sat receiver.

BTW I got it working somewhat... and don't want to waste more time on it

Well, this is not supposed to how it should be working. No problems here
with Agent 6, though. File a bug report https://bugs.winehq.org? Or try
out the developer version 9.4?

That's what the screenshots were for, I think. It's been a while since I tested 9.0

I got mine from Wine HQ at https://www.winehq.org/

And I used that, because it was the easiest way to get an older version
that works well with RootsMagic 9.

I have version 7.0.2. here, and reject all updates provided by Mint.

I also use winetricks for some needed tweaks.

I'm not that guy (Rüdiger Wähling), Mr .jw- should be a little more careful
when marking someone. I'm really curious what are the "obvious reasons" in
my post?

Wine is working here in Mint 21.3. I installed Wine from the Mint repo
a couple of years ago using the command below. Wine has continued
working through a few Mint upgrades.

apt install wine-installer

See also: <https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?t=394972>

The Wine options in the Mint start menu did not work immediately, but
did work after I restarted Mint.

My only problem was that Wine did not install wine-gecko which is
needed to display Windows .chm help files. To install wine-gecko I
followed the steps here:

Which repository?

My Wine is from the Mint repository and is version "6.0.3~repack-1".
Synaptic package manager claims that is the latest there.
Winehq does have later versions.

When I run Synaptic here, I see wine listed as 6.0.3-repaack-1, but
there's also wine-stable, with version 9.0.0.0-jammy-1, and wine-devel
with version 9.4-jammy-1.

Odd.
Here, Synaptic package manager shows "wine-stable" with latest-version
equal to "3.0.1ubuntu1" and "wine-development" with latest-version
equal to "6.0+repack-1ubuntu1".
If it is important, winehq is *not* in my "Settings >> Repositories >>
Additional Repositories".

It's not visible in my settings either, but some further research shows
that that doesn't mean that it isn't there, because these settings don't
show everything, and I know that I did add the repository somewhere,
following the instructions listed here:

https://wiki.winehq.org/Ubuntu

I followed the instructions for Ubuntu 22.04, which mean that I
downloaded a file named winehq.jammy.sources to

/etc/apt/sources.list.d/

and that's where it is, and where Synaptic reads from it.

My guess is that it doesn't show in settings, because of its extension,
which is sources, and not list, like the other files.

Interesting ...

I think at one time, I was able to install WINE satisfactorily.
But that was in a galaxy, far far away.

But once there was 32 bit and 64 bit elements involved,
the wheels kinda fell off.

There is something about "enabling multilib/multiarch" that affects success.
Depending on distro, you MUST check this as your first step,
not your 23rd step when it is too late.

"Enable the multilib repository

The multilib repository enables 32-bit apps to run on 64-bit
installations. Many Windows apps are 32-bit or have 32-bit components,
and even 64-bit apps often have installation .exe files that are 32-bit.
Without the ability to run 32-bit apps, Wine would have limited value."

A number of things we use, are only available as 64-bit installs now,
so this is something you'd want to check... before getting too far
into the process. Multilib (multiarch) capability may not have been completely
removed yet, but it might not be a default. And it should be
checked early in your workflow, of getting WINE to work.

This could be what has already been done to 64-bit Mint for us.

dpkg --print-architecture
amd64

dpkg --print-foreign-architectures # Don't forget to include the letter "s" on the end
i386

sudo dpkg --add-architecture i386 # We don't need to do this, as it is already there

In Synaptic, the only evidence of multiarch I can see is this entry:

wine32-preloader:i386 # The :i386 is the indicator

I'm surprised there aren't more entries like that. Well, actually,
if you select "wine" meta-entry in Synaptic, a HUGE list of :i386 show up,
including wine32:i386, which is what I was expecting to see.

*******

This is an activity today, that requires multiple trials. You
really need a backup and restore capability, to finish the
WINE task satisfactorily.

I will save this for later, when I have a few moments.

There can also be confusion, about what packages you are
supposed to be installing. Like confusing Mono with .NET or something.
Or even "should I install the Microsoft .NET or the WINE .NET".
This is related to "winetricks" entries versus other (potential but
wrong) solutions :-)

Before you can even click a button, you have to do your research
first. More than once, I've been working on the wrong thing,
which is not very satisfying (we're supposed to know what
we're doing, right?) .

Summary: Take your time. There's always an opportunity to be
doing it again. But think how satisfying it would be
to have it 100% functional.

I think that you ask for too much. More than half of all the program
worked with glitches and problems/work arounds in the original windows
environment, and WINE is an amazing undertaking.
