Take a look at 4K Video Downloader, it is not free if you need to
download than 30 video's  a day. It is in my Software Manager.  It works
pretty fast for downloads. There is Video-Download Helper a FF Addon, in
Linux it works for many online videos.

Then, "ytdownloader".

Then, paste the URL into the window that has opened.

Review settings in the GUI. Click when you're ready to download.

Completion dialog shows it is ready for your next command.

Running VLC is left as an exercise for the reader.

When it threw an error at me, it was because the
paste buffer was empty, and it could not be bothered
to say what I'd pasted. The paste status is meant to be
a mystery. The console session, the statements, are mainly
related to building a runtime environment with a bit more
downloads. Since I was in a VM, MESA/Vulkan is all software based.

I used the repository, after that I can run it but once closed it is

Paste a url into "IT"??? there is no "it".
Thats the whole problem there is nothing to be found how to start the
program.

This is fun.

Let's do flatpak.

Now, the first problem with Flatpak, is the search isn't very clever.
I had to use the developers name, to get a hit. "Ytdownloader" was
no good as a search term. Surprise! :-)

Make sure the Terminal window is wide, when doing the search. You need
the Application ID for this stuff, and will have to commit something
to memory. Unless you are a clever Linusian and use a shortcut for the
thing.

flatpak exposes executables for installed applications in /var/lib/flatpak/exports/bin .

However, that directory is not automatically included in the PATH when you install flatpak .
You could include it in the PATH yourself. Let's do that, temporarily. You might have
to mess with ~/.profile or something similar, to permanently add the path component.

gives me quite a lot of output of mainly related files, but at the end:

I have youtube-dl installed but can still use the command yt-dlp, so one
of these must be a fork of the other. I just installed youtubedl-gui,
which is a small gui in which I can choose between different file
formats, one of them being mp4.

There are a number of programs that come
with a copy of FFMPEG.

You can chop bits out of FFMPEG, to
reduce the size. And that's what a program
that wants to use FFMPEG as an "accessory"
would do. Use a lighter weight version as a
partner.

For Youtube Downloader applications, usually
the purpose of FFMPEG, is to re-mux an audio
stream and a video stream, and make a movie file
out of it. Each of the streams is assigned an
identity number like "43" and downloader applications
typically list all the formats available.

As long as you're happy with choices between .vp8
and .mp4 , then maybe you'd be happy to just select
one of those and multiplex it with your favorite audio
format.

If you insist on selecting materials that don't go
together, then FFMPEG will be asked to convert
one of the streams, to a format that works with
the other stream, and then those can be muxed to make
the final movie.

The tool can also have options to "keep originals" and
not delete them. You can then take the original MP4
video only, the audio stream, and mux them yourself with
the more-capable system FFMPEG program.

Yes, everything has a GUI. But... not everything is
clever that way, and you may have regrets you asked for
such a thing. I've seen GUI projects, where all the
params of the command line, are just copied onto the
GUI layout, providing no automation at all. And it's
just a very dumb way of using a command line.

Working with video has always been hard. That's just
the way it is. Even my TV tuner card, when TV programs
are on, the stream lineup on each recording from the
tuner is different. Some video has four streams,
some has five streams [Closed Caption], the stream numbers
(enumeration) is never twice the same. It's all jolly
convenient, that is for sure.

The green bar in the GUI, tells you to click the window (so the
window has focus), then do ctrl-V to paste your URL of the
thing you want to download.
