Just repaired a Win10 Home machine v 1909 (FWIW: No newer version will
install.) and the last thing I usually do is the updates.

It had been properly updating and all I needed were two.

Even though there were no more updates, I checked again. Normally I'd
get the message that the machine is all up to date but instead I got the
red warning:

Your device is missing important security fixes.

That said, there were no more updates to be found.

What I did next was to try uninstalling several updates, one at a time.
When I ran Windows Update again, they were found and installed normally
but still I keep getting the message: Your device is missing important
security fixes.

The troubleshooter says no problems.

DSIM said no problems and I even deleted the software distribution
folder and tried again.

SFC says no problems

Mostly I'm just curious as I know the user is not the type to manually
check .

Does the message show an error number, like in the example here ?

https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/all/your-device-is-missing-important-security-and/30a6402f-fdc1-471e-9635-e2c9f467a983

One thing that may appear in the list, is an Optional Update
which is a preview for next months update. While Microsoft
sometimes changes the status of updates (changes them to
required ones), having that sit there probably is not
hurting anything.

You should also check the History link on the Windows Update
page in settings. The History link may show some update
is failing.

Go to catalog.update.microsoft.com and manually download
the failing KB, then double click the .msu to install it.
If it fails to install because "Not for this OS", that
can indicate a Servicing Stack Update is missing (a
recent one).

Reboot, then scan for updates again.

I am shutting the machine down and returning it to the owner shortly.

I'm going to let this one go for now

Unlike something like Linux which will immediately alert you to any
update, Windows will only offer them to you when it's good and ready.
It's like a date you're picking up at 7pm because you both agreed that
you would go out at 7pm but she's still not ready when you get there and
you're stuck waiting two hours for her at the door so that her hair and
make-up look just right.

Let's just hope that she's worth the wait.

Hmmm. This sound suspicious.

Would they have banned someone named "David" ?

Do the moderators have a mighty banhammer they
swing on occasion ? For off-topic posting ?

The "they might not let you join" sounds like
some of that first-hand experience which is
so important in life.

Forum mods, one of which carries the banhammer.

https://fanatical.imgix.net/product/original/586262f4-4e1f-48e5-a937-1b01fdac7a64.jpg?auto=compress,format&w=450&fit=crop&h=253

I think you've been playing that game, and the
creature with the banhammer caught up with you.

If you delete SoftwareUpdates folder, in a fit of pique,
then the History link may lose its listing, so checking
on the screen shows you nothing at that point.

But, the OS never loses track of what updates are
in or out of the system. It does this by scanning
WinSXS and determining via Component Based Servicing (CBS),
what packages and versions are there.

You can Repair Install, and easily bring the convenience
information back, as the OS updates itself. This is
easier than the charade of deleting SoftwareUpdates.

I was deleting SoftwareUpdates at one time, but I'm not convinced
at the moment, that the script for that is fresh and up to date,
and it may not be working 100% properly at the moment. They have
you shut down BITS service as one of the steps, but BITS is
not used at the moment and DoSVC is, and there is no step
for DoSVC in the procedure.

If I couldn't even boot a system and I had convinced myself
(somehow) it was the fault of Windows Update, I might
consider deleting SoftwareUpdates (follow the logic of the
script, to get the list of stuff needing deletion).

But if the OS is operating, I might do one of two things:

1) Look at the History list, go to catalog.update.microsoft.com
and install a failed update (one with no success entry)
manually.

2) If the History link is blank and you cannot view failure info,
do a Repair Install and then check the History link.

And naturally, back up a customer system, before wading in with
delete shears in hand.

my suggestoin:
* buy new hard drive
* install Devuan Linux on it with Mate or Cinnamon desktop
* mount old drive with USB/SATA adapter (or as ESATA if you can) and
copy all data files back to the new hard drive [keep it for later]

Then spend 10 minutes teaching the owner to use Linux. Install Libre
Office, Firefox or Chrome, VLC, and whatever else you might need. Run
Windows 10 in a VirtualBox VM for anything else that needs windows.

Problems will disappear. I have done this to windows computers that I
refused to (or could not) "up"grade to W10, but were getting so
clogged/piggy [and needed a new HD anyway] that they were becoming
unusable. One in particular is in use by a non-computer-savvy relative.

Next time the person has a problem I will check the update situation.
Just to emphasize...Windows update is working fine other than the

Honestly, that's not bad advice. When I don't feel like spending my life
solving people's computer problems without pay, I usually just install
Mint for them and suddenly I don't get the routine calls. I was planning
on doing the same for my mother over the weekend when I decided to fix
her machine which was first encrypted without permission, then locked
out, then unable to activate but her Intel NUC, for whatever reason,
refused to boot from the working and tested Linux Mint USB key...

.... all the BIOS settings were correct, in fact, I booted a Windows 10
key without issue.

Download the Media Creation Tool
Create the Win10 21H1 on a USB drive(not DVD)
Create a new folder on the 1909 device in the root directory (C:\ drive)
e.g. W10_21H1
Copy the files from the USB to the new folder(created on the 1909 device
root drive)
Run Setup.exe from that folder(do not run setup.exe from the USB media)
Ensure when prompted and verify that 'Keep Files and apps' is selected.
=> Don't interrupt the process(could take quite long, older devices with
Intel 4th through 7th gen, Atom or similar AMD chipsets(circa 2015 through
2018) can take quite a bit of time - not minutes but hours.

If you'd like to install an earlier version of Win10, e.g. 2004 or
20H2(aka 2009)you can download an earlier version using this link's
recommended method.

Not so much off-topic, more like drilling for the truth.

Indeed. The main man sounded rather fishy and it was later discovered

Yep, did all that, it would not update to a newer version.

Anyway, the unit does work and the owner is happy I got it going again.

Might consider doing what's been common with some devices.
Remove the audio driver, rerun setup.exe again from the previously
mentioned 2004(or 20H2, 21H1) folder. Once W10 is installed, it should
find an update the audio driver.

Every device sends a UserAgent string. This
allows specific responses from a website when
returning a result.

That doesn't mean you're blocked. It means the
web site coding doesn't work the way you expected
it to.

Hello.

Will you please advise why you permit BDAqua to operate on your BBS when
he has openly admitted that he nurtures malware on his computer(s).

I’d also welcome you advice as to why the BBS exists at all. Will you
share that information?

Thank you.

How do you "nurture" malware? I'm interested, I have hundreds
of samples I've collected over the years to study, and didn't realize
they needed feeding.
You claim to have been a "malware expert" for almost 20 years.
Can't be an expert if you've never examined them. Your statement would
be an obvious *LIE*.
How many samples do YOU "nurture"?

Where did you get that email address ?

That email address probably doesn't get routed anywhere
within the mail server.

If a website wants to be contacted, sometimes they have
an address on their contact page. For example, if law enforcement
wants to talk to them, there is probably an address suitable
for that function.

But if I was trying random addresses like "anonymous",
I would not expect that to reach anyone. That might be
an outgoing-only address. Similar to a "no-reply@somesite.com".
