Good day one an all, I have a question that is actually about Thunderbird.
;-)

I'm using 115.5.2 On Win 10 Pro and it is mostly configured how I like it.
:-)

In the left hand side of Tb I have a folder pane with all the accounts and
folders displayed.

I'll use the Inbox for my question...

Account name
------------
Inbox
Drafts
Sent
Archives
Junk
Deleted

Another Account name
Etc...

When the Inbox has new unread mail in it, the display is annotated to show
how many unread mails there are.

Inbox 4

But when the mails have been read the numeric annotation vanishes even
though the now read mails are still within the Inbox.

Is there an About:Config setting that can be adjusted to also show how
many mails are in the Inbox at all times?

Thanks
D.

Nb: I'm sure back in the days it did show the numbers...

To the right of the account name I have a 3-dot menu with 'Show total
nessage count'.

No such thing as a 3-dot menu on my Win10 TB 115.5.2
It remember TB showing numbers of Unread: and Total: on the right side
of Status Bar which it still show on Betterbird.
Is this another useful info being removed from TB?

I don't have a "New Message button" but I have a "Get Messages".
I can't find anywhere a "New Message" button not even in the Customize
Options.
Anyway it's no problem for me I hit F5 for new messages but just for
curiosity I still would like to know where that new message button is. :-)

My 3 horizontal dots are at the right edge of the folder pane header,
which is just above the vertical list of email folder and USENET group
folders. Clicking on the dots provides a list of options that don't seem
change any TB behavior that I can detect with respect to displaying or
not displaying any information. Makes a nice ornament however.

What? You don't see the 4 items you can show and 1 option to hide local folders?

It's a perfect example of the poorly thought-out v115 GUI, you have to
enable one thing you don't want, simply to see another thing you didn't
know you needed, in order to enable something you do actually want!

View/Folders/Folder Header Pane
then you'll get a [...]
from where you can enable the total message counter

OR
View-Layout-Message List Header - so you can toggle the card or list view of headers.

Aha! I had no triple dots because as you note the Header Pane was ticked
off.

Now ticked On and back in place, so I have the three dots and the number
of messages displayed.

Thanks for the info, appreciated. :-)

Oh! Now can someone advise on how to re-implant (already scarce) hair
after a morning of tugging...

I wondered where those three dots could be...

As I said, "Clicking on the dots provides a list of options that don't
seem change any TB behavior that I can detect with respect to displaying
or not displaying any information." I didn't enumerate the list of
options. Yes, they are the 4 items you mention and an option to hide
local folders. None of the 4 options provides a "get messages" button
and none of them change the fact that the number displayed to the right
of the folder always represents the total number of messages I've
accumulated in that folder regardless of any permutation of the 4
options. I can't get rid of the number without deleting messages from
the folder. I don't care how many I've got; I don't need to see that
number. I'd rather see how many new unread messages are there before I
expand the folder to see if there are any new ones. It would save the
time of having to click on each folder to see if there are new messages.
Oh, and to clarify, everything I've written pertains to USENet group
folders and not to any e-mail folders.

By default, without turning on those numbers which shows ALL messages, the count of unread messages shows.
https://postimg.cc/yJxnrHpN

And the 3 buttons will show this
https://postimg.cc/B8zprVRB

And I circled the two check marks that produce a "GET" button (it's a cloud and hard to see) and a NEW MESSAGE buton.

Where do I need to look for the "cloud" it because all I see in your
screen capture images and on my monitor are the check marks. And, even
with no options checked, I continue to see the number representing the
total number of of messages. If I check only the "Show New Message"
option, nothing changes. No matter which options I check, separately
and/or in combination, nothing changes. The only thing that has an
effect is the "Hide Folder Pane Header" option.

Unhide the folder pane header! That's where those two icons "get messages" "new message" will show.

Thanks to this thread I have now found the three dots and enabled
total message count. I've also enabled Folder Size, which gives a very
good indication of what to prune.

Additionally from the same ... menu I can get the various folder size

Though I've now switched that aspect off again.
