Unfortunately this seems to be the case. May be there is other technical
trouble at some servers too. E.g. I posted three announcements to
comp.sys.acorn.announce ten days ago. That had not been published yet
so I assume that they were lost however.

I see that that these reports relate to the middle of August, which
is when mine broke.

Looks like it is something changed at PlusNet/GigaNews (the DNS
response?) that effects the new RISC OS stack, but not the ROM based
stack.

I see also that David has seen the same as me - ROD stack fails but
ROOL ROM is ok, as does 'BernardinSussex'.

That thread looks very relevant - a contributing factor may be the
ISP router version.

I've not had usenet access for some weeks. According to Oprheus this was
because the place he gets it via had cut off service due to "too much use".
Just prior to that I'd got *thousands* of old repeated postings. However
this morning I got usenet to fetch OK.

Orpheus also use Giganews and have had problems of late, just back to
normal now.

Much less satisfactory the newsnet or a mailing list.

With both systems stuff just pops in nicely, daily. !Pluto just filters
stuff into boxes and I read, dump or archive as required. No need to go
through a login and search process. You can call me lazy if you like but
forums are simply too much hassle and I still cannot understand why ROOL
went down this route when the former are much easier to use.

I simply wrote the announces with Messenger (now Version 9) for newsgroup
comp.sys.acorn.announce. Until now this this was automatically redirected
in which way ever to csaa@owlart.net and after hours or one or two days
I got a reply from Andrew that my submissions have been published.

However this time I didn't got any reply from him :-(. My news provider
is eternal september. May be something went wrong there. I also had trouble
contactiing ROOL a while. One internal forwarding at their side ended up in a
spam classfication which was sent back to me. Reason for it was a missing
certificate. May be its something similar here but in this case I won't get
aware of it but only perhaps a person at eternal september :-(. I shall try
to resend the submissions directly to csaa@owlart.net. However it would be
interesting to find the reason for the loss. Perhaps there is a general bug
affecting other groups too. But I don't have a clue how a can examine this
from my side in more detail.

From what I remember, this approach is fine for a compliant newsreader. If
it has been working for you, then it still should work.

I'm fairly sure that at the last MUG meeting (which Chris was at, so he
should have known this too) it was mentioned in passing that there has been
a problem with CSAA submissions for a while due to an issue at the
moderator's news server -- which I think is the Orhpeus one. Whether it was
actually the server, which I think is Giganews, or the way that Orpheus
reference it in their own systems wasn't made clear.

Effectively there has been no way for approved posts to be sent to the group
for about a month; this has certainly affected posts that I've sent. It
might have been useful if this had been publicised more widely somewhere,
but to be fair, I might just have missed it.

As others havs said, this now looks to be fixed.

If you know what they are and have a system set up for them. Many won't have
access to Usenet, or a threading-aware mail reader -- and most of those
won't want to get either of them.

I'd still prefer newsgroups or a mailing list, but I'm aware enough of the
big, wide world outside of RISC OS[1] to know that I'm in a minority.

1. And 32-bit RISC OS, at that: see the recent MUG meeting discussions[2]
and where it was noted that the _rest_ of the RISC OS users are these days.
Clue: it's not usenet or a mailing list.

2. Or even the discussion about it on the ROOL forum recently.

I'm not using the new comms stack. I have a ticket open with PlusNet.

Submissions to CSAA appear to have been borked for a month, reportedly due
to the problems with the Orpheus news server. It doesn't matter how Thomas
submitted his posts: they will not have appeared.

The announcement of the October WROCC meeting was lost for the same reason.

The problem appears to be fixed this weekend. Coincidentally, people are
reporting that Orpheus news server is back, too.

I also prefer usenet. Most web forums I've looked at seem a PITA to use.
There are some rare exceptions. e.g. I do use 'Pink Fish', a forum for
Hi-Fi/audio. Unusually, it works well with !NetSurf with 'scripting off'.
That means I don't see the adverts, etc, and the pages are much easier to
read. Higher content/area factor than many forums. Less clutter.

Horses for courses. I'm happy using both depending on the content. I'm quite
picky about which groups or forums I subscribe to.

Many web forums I've seen (briefly) tend to suffer from two problems.

1) Page layout and choice of fonts, colours, etc, presents far less of the
visible area as text, with lots of 'glare' from awful colours, 'design
layout', etc. Hard to read. Makes my eyes hurt.

2) Ads and tracking of the user.

Using PFM with scripting off means none of the above is a problem. It is
also very well moderated by a real person.
