Could someone using news.plus.net (or otherwise) confirm that this is
getting through.

I've been getting connection failures from the server and haven't received
any articles since 8th October.

Received here OK.

news.plus.net is an alias to the giganews servers (i.e. not part of
PlusNet)

Yes, it came through okay Richard.

News.Individual.NET is the service I use for the comp.sys.acorn newsgroups.

Dave

News has been very quiet in recent times.

From the beginning of August to now (13/10/22) I've had...

news.eternal-september.org
--------------------------
alt.comp.software.firefox 336
alt.comp.software.thunderbird 429

News.Individual.NET
-------------------
comp.sys.acorn.announce 9
comp.sys.acorn.apps 20
comp.sys.acorn.hardware 2
comp.sys.acorn.misc 29
comp.sys.acorn.networking 0
comp.sys.acorn.programmer 1

I've noticed here how little traffic there has been lately. All quiet on
the western front.

How unfortunate, such a time wasting blob to wade through. :-(

Dave

Yes, I know, I've been subscribed to it for years, but I only visit when I
really have to.

Which browser did you use to try and register?

Was there no tick box below the text that says "Please prove that you're a
human" the box can take a few seconds to appear, just tested it here with
!Iris. But justed tested with NetSurf 3.10 and also a latest build and the
box below the text does not appear - could be a bug in !NetSurf

Are you using the new internet stack? I have found that when the ip6
stack is installed it fails to resolve the news.plus.net address.
Going back to the standard ROM internet stack and things are fine. At
the moment I am not bothering with the ip6 stack.

Have you reported the issue. Otherwise it will not get fixed. In any case
news.plus.net is not using IPv6 as PlusNet don't support IPv6 yet.

You don't have to have the IPv6 stack enabled on the on the new stack.
It's a button choice in configure. If not ticked then IPv6 not in use.

I realise that, and I have never enabled the ip6 option. I actually
checked that the option was not enabled. It is the address
news.plus.net that will not resolve, everything that is not a news
server resolves fine. I tried pinging the giga news addresses that
the plusnet address aliases to and none of those resolve either. It
appears to be a problem with news servers.

I use giganews (like news.plus.net), and saw all these posts.

Strange - I have been using the new stack since early this year, and
have never seen that. Mind you, I use usenet.f9.net.uk, but that
resolves to giganews as does news.force9.net. I have also just tried
pinging news.plus.net and that resolves and works ok.

I've just tried pinging news.plus.net and it resolves fine for me.

I've no idea what might be causing your problem, though, sorry.

In desperation you could add the above address as an entry in your Hosts
file.

I assume this is when trying to create an account, rather than signing
in to an existing account?

It's a thought. I should add that this was not a single test. It
started on Aug 14th, according to the NewsHound logs. I assumed
initially the problem was down to PlusNet, since the new stack had
been working ok. By chance I uninstalled the new stack at some point
and news started working again. I have installed and uninstalled the
new stack (12th and 18th May versions and the 1st June ROD version)
on numerous occasions since then, but the behaviour is still the same.

I have racked my brains to check whether I installed something else
around that time that could be the cause but have come up with
nothing. It is baffling that it is news servers that fail to resolve
- everything else seems ok.

It is the only game in town now, but the signal to noise is dreadful.
