I am looking for a fast RO computer for internet browsing.

I thought I saw recently a post suggesting that a Pi4 was currently the
fastest (readilly affordable) RO machine,is that so?

yep I believe so. Take a look at the "FOURtress" from RISCOSBits its runs
at 2.1Ghz

http://www.pihard.co.uk/shop.htm

http://www.pihard.co.uk/fourtress.htm

R-Comp are doing the 4te https://www.riscoscomputers.co.uk/4te.shtml

I am also looking at them, myself.

Probably. The 4té, from R-Comp, is a Pi4 and it's convincingly fast. The
general processing speed is already impressing, but the network speed
surprised me even more: talking to both NASses in our local network is even
faster than on the premium Windows 10 PC.

But even then, internet browsing is still noticeably slower than on modern
PC's, however doable. Having said that, the 4té is one of my best
investments of the last decade!

Kind regards,
Paul

The real requirement is to run Iris at a more useable speed.

I'd been looking at the range from RISCOS bits but hadn't checked out
R-Comp. I'm afraid R-Comp's price rules it out straightway.

I'd been looking at the PiRo which says it can run at up to 2.1G and
wondering what is required to run at that speed.

I'd been thinking about the often used system of something simple hanging
on the VESA mount on the back of the monitor, with keyboard, mouse and
network connection

The RISCOSbits stuff runs at that speed, too, doesn't it?

There's probably not much more information that you've already got from this
thread, but WROCC try to keep this page up to date with outline details of
who has what available (we leave it up to the linked company sites to tell
you what is actually on offer):

The PiRo IS from RISCOSBits

Their PIpod IV Ultra also looks quite interesting as I have a Strongarm
RISC PC (retired but working) and a Kinetic RPC

yes the FOURtress does and I think is a better spec then the PiRO

Iris is a very big program! So a Pi 4 running at a higher clock speed will
help.

How are you comparing prices? They all have different specs.

Indeed it does, its overclocked to 2.1 Ghz from 1.5 Ghz

The nearest is !Iris, which has most of the modern stuff except for
videos. I use nearly all the time now (hardly use the browser on the PC
now since I got !Iris ) Its still being developed.

The FOURTress is looking good especially as Andy still has some WROCC
"Specials" without the hard drive. I'm now considering whether I need the
hard drive for my intended use.

As far as Linux goes, I had one of the first ARMBooks, which comes with
Linux, and I don't think I've even looked at it.

Me too! Some frustrations with slow loads but generally good.
One irritation is that some sites refuse to play with !Iris with 'Access
denied' messages, www.airbnb.co.uk being one that comes to mind.

I had that issue with the Argos site, Andrew Rawnsley suggested trying one
of the other User Agents, and I was then able to access the site. For the
above site.

I changed the user Agent to:
Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1; SV1)

Then tried accessing the site and it worked (Remember - you must not just
refresh the webpage but must re-click on new web page)

Chris Hall did some "bench marks" but I take that sort of thing with a
pinch of salt. It's not testing real world actions.

The Pi 4 is pretty much the all round fastest machine, and great for
RISC OS applications. But I would not recommend it for web browsing from
RISC OS, we just don't have a good enough browsers, or crucially, a good
enough OS to make full use the hardware. If you want to web browse, put
Linux or Android on it.

Sorry Druck, but I would have to disagree with you, have you used !Iris ?

!Iris is pretty up to date and can access majority of sites. (its can't do
videos), but has Javascript, CSS, HTML5 etc..

I now rarely use my PC's browser, since starting to use Iris.

Iris is being developed all the time, etc.

The FOURTress from RISCOSBits that Chris Hughes and I have been looking at:

http://www.pihard.co.uk/fourtress.htm

Includes:

http://www.riscosbits.co.uk/edos.htm

That said, a lot of people say that Iris, although still in development,
meets most of their needs.

There aren't many sites I use regularly, but if it can't do videos on
the BBC news website, it isn't going to be much use to me.

Well I'll wait for it to support all CPU cores on the machine and GPU
acceleration of video, as those are the things which make web browsing
usable on the class of hardware that RISC OS runs on. Otherwise instead
of using a Linux Pi4B, I would be back on the x86 PC (running Linux of
course).

Odd. The latest version on

is 1.010 (4-April-2021)

Do you have another source?

Not really, investors get early updated releases. Mine is one of those.

The new version as mentioned on the IconBar website, has a useful password
manager and a few fixes such as saved image and saving page as base64 now
fixed.

I now have my RaPi4B and it seems to work well.

I've been looking at the BBC website and, although perhaps slower to load
than Firefox on a Windows machine it displays very well. Once loaded
scrolling is as fast as on the said PC.

I have had an issue trying to access Farnell or CPC's website in that
typing in the respective URLs and hitting return seems to do precisely
nothing but Ebay works, though I haven't yet tried to buy anything (no
need)
