Thank you all for the donations this week. I received more this past week than
I have in the past several years combined. With the donations I already had, I
am now in the $250-300 spending range.

I use 100% of the donations towards Mystic related hardware. With this money I
will be putting together an ARM 64-bit Linux setup for development of all
things ARM (except Apple M I'll probably have to pick up a used Apple M1 Mac
Mini someday to get that done).

I was just about to pull the trigger on an Orange Pi 5 today but then I saw it
doesn't have Wifi and Bluetooth, so I am off to check out some local stores to
see if I can get lucky and find stock of anything useful.

.... A SQL query walks into a bar and sees two tables. Asks: 'Can I join you?'

Something for the future to ponder, would you ever get into trying RISC-V
compatibility? Seems that RISC-V is quickly being something lots of people are
shouting about now, might be a good thing to get into?

Maybe something like a VisionFive 2 might be something to use in the future,
looks promising.

Yeah absolutely. I think they started adding RISC-V back into 2019 to the
compiler I use for Mystic, so assuming its in a usable state I don't see why
not.

I do think there is little benefit of RISC-V for a BBS system over existing
ARM/Intel. The thing it has going for it is energy efficiency which is great
for embedded devices, things that run off of batteries, etc.

But if I am not mistaken it can't hang with Intel in terms of the number of CPU
cycles it takes to do things, which means it'll always be better to grab a
non-RISC device over RISC for a BBS anyway.

I assume their is a donation page on your website? I will check when I am done
here.

I am having a problem with my current Mystic setup (I think a 48 July 22
First when I am in message area I press p for post and instead of default to
All it defaults to Access denied *all in read) I looked in ini files and
config but did not find out. Any I ideas? where to look to correct this?

Next is the File Area. When I press V to view a file it displays contents of
zip file. But it does not view individual files test or ansi.

I installed the current version of A48 dated this year and all works just as
expected. Also when typing in my current version the text in message areas
does not word wrap. I need to hit enter key.

I was thinking of install your A48 and copying my data files over for a fresh
start. Not sure that will work for whats wrong my current setup I may copy
over bad config stuff and have same problem.

What do you recommend?

Most likely automated scripts... Not sure how difficult it would be...
but you could simply drop any terminal connections that don't detect at
least ANSi support. Since the automated scripts most likely don't.

This may of course limit a handful of real users with older terminal
appliances.

IIRC, Synchronet's login.js does this by default now.

My guess is its probably this:

+ The default value for the "To:" field when posting a message is now
configurable on a per-theme basis. The value of prompt #104 will now be
used as the default for the To field. If you've never modified this then
you don't have to do anything but you may need to reset it to default in
the prompt editor otherwise.

You'll want to go into you prompts and reset it to default (prompt #104) or set
it to "All". Mystic should update all of this on its own unless it was
customized (assuming the new prompt.dat is replaced when upgrading each time).

Za> Next is the File Area. When I press V to view a file it displays
Za> contents of zip file. But it does not view individual files test or
Za> ansi.

I think that might depend on your archive configuration. If the new install of
A48 works and you haven't modified your archive settings then you could try to
take the archive.dat from the new A48 and copy to your BBS's data folder.

Either should be ok. I can help you work out the issues or you should be ok to
copy data over as well.

In fairness, per thread/process, ARM doesn't either... As for a BBS,
even an RPi is more than enough, same for the RISC-V boards. Depends on
how many simultaneous users you're likely to see and how much web
traffic you may need to fend off.

That said, by the time you add a case and storage, one of the mini intel
celeron/pentium boxes (N6005, J4125, N5100, etc) are a better value
option at similar cost.

It wouldn't be hard to do that just a couple minutes of effort...

Mystic already does come with an optional connect script that requires the user
to press escape twice within a certain number of seconds or it hangs up. This
way doesn't exclude ASCII users and has a similar outcome, so that might be a
viable option.

I don't even see this person's original message. Hopefully that doesn't mean
someone is filtering out MYSTIC echo posts again from zone 2...

.... I think I am, therefore, I am... I think.

Yeah thats kind of what I was getting at.

We can go buy a used Dell Optiplux mini for like $100-149 which lately is about
the going price of a Pi 4 all-in. That 6600T in the Dell will be 4-5 times
faster and probably comes with a SSD. The bonus is also that its x86 so its
easier to emulate DOS doors.

With the latest price surging on the Pi (And presumably other SBCs?) its
probably best value to grab a Dell refurbished. Back when Pi were $35 they
were a lot more compelling for a BBS than they are now at over $100.

Another approach (not one if you want the cheapest option!) is to install
Proxmox (or your other favourite VM solution) on an Intel NUC and spin up your
BBS in a VM. This is quite a cool way to easily play with different bits of
BBS software in isolated environments.

I saw this post and went on to donate but it's from paypal. I removed my
paypal account after a recent policy they enacted which repulsed me.

Is there a way I can merely send a check in the mail as a donation?

I hope you got a tidy windfall.. :)

Thankfully I haven't even been to a bank in years.

The last time I took a cheque into the bank they looked at it and me up and
down, then they held it for 5 days before I could use it.

I was stone cold broke at the time. Really annoying.

I am glad those days are over.

Are checks even a thing anymore? I haven't used/seen/received a check in a
decade or more.

When I need to send someone money I email it to them and they deposit it in
their bank.

Are you seriously asking that question? Do you really think banks don't

Hello Daniel,

>> When I need to send someone money I email it to them and they
>> deposit it in their bank.

Da> Are you seriously asking that question?

Yes.

Da> Do you really think banks don't issue checks anymore?

I am sure that checks and drafts are still a thing and used in some cases but I
am serious when I say I haven't seen or used one in over a decade, it must be
close to twenty years in my case.

I don't use paypal or any service to send money. I can email funds out to
others from my banks website. There is no charge to me or the recipient.

Cheques are not a bad thing, they just aren't used much any more.

Ttyl :-),

If you pay a bill via your bank's website, you are not emailing funds. Your
bank is more than likely still sending a check (whether plain or digital) to
the recipient of the payment. Banks have just eliminated the need for customers
to write out the checks themselves.

Nick

The info travels by email. Banks still record everything as always, but no
cheques are involved.
