Musk is amusing but I might agree about Bezos. Last night was the first
time I watched an Amazon Prime video since it went to 'ad supported'. It's
not quite as annoying as FreeVee but it's close.

Knock on wood but Netflix's cheap subscription has relatively few ads and
the interruptions are for one ad, not three or four. I've watched entire
movies/episodes with no ads.

My wife, when I was married to her, didn't waste one minute, even a few
seconds, to get back home from work, where she could find me a bit
later. She lived for the moments that we were together, not for those we
were apart doing our own things. This is what herself told me many times.

This reminds me of something :) Back when I was teaching high school, a
couple of times I had to stay in the office and work till closing time.
Closing time for that school was smack at midnight (it was both a day
and a night school).

On both occasions, I noticed that the same female teacher had stayed
late as long, and in fact she was the one who closed and locked the gate
door to school behind us. A wealthy, tall, fifty some year old
fuck-worthy Texan math teacher. I asked her how often she did that. She
said, "Every night!". I said, "Why you? Didn't you tell me you're living
with your husband? What does he say about this?"

She said, "That son of a bitch is the reason I took this
responsibility!", and when I kept looking at her like I was searching
for an answer, she continued, "I even work in this school to stay away
from that dork."

That's why DFS's wife works 50 hours a week.

This was one of my first encounters with American way of life when I got
here. It was so unusual to me to interrupt anything, movie or not, on
TV, with commercials. And yet I'd see it was just natural to Americans.

In Iran, no program of any kind allowed ads inside them. The ads were
all thrown before, or after the programs, never inside. And that was
what made sense to me.

I thought Europeans were like Americans too, but then I saw a clip with
George Harrison being interviewed in the USA, and he expressed his
astonishment at the way ads are interrupting any TV program :) I don't
know about now, but back then, Americans seemed to be the only country
in the world that the decision makers could allow themselves doing that
to their people.

Early on, when Spanish-speaking TV channels began appearing among other
English speaking ones here, I noticed they too, wouldn't show ads inside
their programs. Later they adjusted I think, but not for any program.
Last time I watched TV they wouldn't show ads inside live soccer (that's
why I watched them on Mexican channels - the broadcast in American
channels and how they inserted ads up viewers' asses were insulting to me).

It's not a matter of "capitalism" and such bullshit. It is only a matter
of how much respect American decision-makers have for their people. It's
unique! And then it began to spread to all sorts of other fields, like
healthcare and education costs, housing, etc. It looked (and looks) to
me a uniquely disrespectful and uncivil "system" in the world.

hh calls it "market" system. Hehe :) I think perhaps that's how those
crooks could do that to you. They sold that as "market" and got away
with it with their own people.

This was just one of the first surprises for me. There were so many,
that if I get the time, I'll perhaps go over them. I've covered all that
in the physics forum of course. Everything I say here, I've already said
more than once in the Physics forum.

We've been trained but it still sucks. Often it is 3 minutes or more of
ads every 10 minutes. Often there aren't that many different ads so they
repeat. To mix it up they might have a 20 second segment of an insurance
ad rather than the full 60 seconds and add on others to make up the time
slot.

Amazon sometimes tries for directed ads so I frequently see them for a
furniture store in Denver. My internet is wireless and the Verizon node
usually is in Denver so that's where it looks like the IP originates. I'm
about 900 miles from Denver so I'm going to drive right down and buy a
couch.

Stacking all the ads at the end of a show wouldn't work. Who would watch
them?

Of course most magazines are nothing more than vehicles for advertising,
as were newspapers when anyone still read them.

Thst can be a little math problem for you. Assuming data is available for
the hits ratio of radio, tv, print, and web ads as well as the associated
costs maximize the allocation of the advertising budget. Sadly I think a
certain number of physics majors wind up doing shit like that for a
living. They definitely can find a home as quants on Wall Street. To quote
an old blues song Id rather drink muddy water and live in a hollow log.

When I was married it worked well when I was on the road a lot as a field
engineer and she was in grad school in Boston. We'd get together for a fun
filled weekend in Chicago, Toronto, Boston, or wherever. When she
graduated and got a job and I wasn't traveling as much it was the
beginning of the end. I don't think either of us were really into
togetherness.
