Me too, there were several attements I think on an xbox style
controller, not one really made a huge inroad it would be great to have
something like the steam controller where you can change buttons or
replace a touchpad with a stick or mouse depending on your needs.
I cannot do that, but I can do it in the format of an arcade stick!

It's a bit big for me... but I like the candy-colored buttons. Makes
me hungry.

I really need to find myself a nice, classic six-button gamepad.

I was thinking whether to get these controllers or not. I have the
Switch sub giving me access to all the SNES, GB, etc. games. Seems you
are happy with them.

My one concern, I'd like to ask the people here, I am new to Switch
buying it only 6 months ago. How much longer will it be around, I have
heard of Switch II. Should I keep buying games and accessories at this
point. Am worried it will get sunset'ed soon.

I'd assume any games at least will be playable on the switch II.
Accessories probably will work as they're all either wireless or USB C.
You never know of course.

Always a possibility. I think Nintendo has figured out DRM enough that
they're willing to try backwards compatibility again though, and I
suspect the specialized emulator controllers will work regardless.

They are gun shy because of what happened with the Gamecube to Wii
transition, but I really do think they're going to have another go at it
with an incrementally improved Switch+.

Like Justisaur said, I'd assume that the controllers would still work,
as they're using standard Bluetooth and USB protocols. That means they
should work with your PC as well.

Nintendo hasn't said much about successor to the Switch, but they did say
recently that Nintendo Accounts are supposed to ease the transition to
the new platform. What that exactly means is open to interpreation, but
it should at least mean you won't need a completely new online account.
That should also imply that emulated games bought online should carry
over.

My guess is that it will also support some sort of backwards compatibility
for games. These days console games don't talk to the hardware directly,
and instead use APIs like on PCs. That means it's possible to upgrade
the CPU and GPU, like current generation PlayStation and XBox consoles
did, while stillbeing able to play previous generation games and without
having to include the older CPU/GPU hardware.

A big question is whether the successor to the Switch will compatible with
physical Switch game cards. There's probably no reason to implement a
completely new and incompatible game card slot, but it's possible that the
new console won't come with one at all. I think that would be premature
if, as all signs indicate, it's going to be released in the next year
or two, but Nintendo may think this is the time to go digital only.

That is a great point. I started out buying games on cards, but pretty
much switched to all digital when I realized what a PITA that is. Resale
and sharing games with friends just isn't that much of a priority any
longer for me.

I agree. Eventually, there will be no card slot. It's a sound prediction.
Mortal Combat 10 was already basically a dongle and downloaded the entire
updated game as soon as you stuck it in. It uses nothing on the card at
all other than the authorization token.

I bought a few games on cards for the kids originally, but they lost most of
them. I'm very glad it has a digital marketplace. I'm not sure one the available
storage on it for many games though, or if you can delete them somehow
and re-download if you need space, which I assume is possible.

One of the kids managed to delete my profile and saved games, not that
I had any plan to play those games again, but maybe some day I'll
want to go back to Zelda?

You are right I think, my Switch stuff will _probably_ carry over to
Switch II. I was thinking post-Switch era, I have been hit with GC and
Wii services being terminated. Before the Wii broke (will get it fixed
one day) I patched it to use homebrew servers. I wonder how likely that
is with Switch.

It is a good point, now I am rethinking why am I buying cards. Maybe a
couple of mSD with a lot of games on each and swap those around would
provide better future-proofing.

Since the boxes have nothing but cover art, no manuals or postcards
inside to read anyway.

That's a plus, pro tip

So would buying games digitally be better for future-proofing? I like
some games on cards, like classic Nintendo games and digital for Indie
games.

Digital only would need a lot of space the few games I have are proably
at 512Gb already.

Cards have the advantage that they'll work so long as you can find
a working Nintendo Switch to play them on. At least for those games
that have the complete game on the card and don't require an Internet
connection to play.

Digital downloads are more likely to work with the next generation Switch
console. However, Nintendo hasn't promised anything. I think it would
be in Nintendos interest to have some sort of backwards compatibility,
as they'll be selling both the old and new console and their software at
the same time for a year or more. It'll be easier to convince people to
make the upgrade if they can carry both their old and new games around
with them without having to fit both consoles in their pockets.

Assuming that Nintendo goes with an upgraded Tegra processor with a
faster ARM CPU and Nvidia GPU then backwards compatibility shouldn't
be difficult or have a significant cost. On the other hand if they
switch to something like AMD processor in the Steam Deck, then backwards
compatilbility would be much harder to do, and could limit it to just
the classic games that are being emulated anyways.

However, a radical change in CPU and GPU architectures isn't likely and
should've leaked by now. There shouldn't be any reason for the next
generation Switch to not be fully backwards compatible and not support
all Switch games, whether on cards or digital downloads.
