Solderpunk points out that we just passed the 4th birthday of the Gemini
protocol.

=> gemini://gemini.circumlunar.space/news/2023_06_20.gmi

And over on Fedi, we're discussing Usenet quite a bit more. I thought
I'd pop on here and try to stimulate a bit of discussion. Does anyone
have any interesting projects they'd like to share?

I set up web and gopher mirrors for the tilde NNTP space. It showcases
the power of Rocksolid Light to present NNTP feeds in a tidy web forum.

Very cool! I tried the gopher version, but had some problems with it. In
elpher, the M-type links to the messages aren't recognized. In elinks
and bombadillo, they are recognized, but the files are not found. Maybe
a problem with the way the links are generated?

The web version works great in elinks, though.

I am unable to replicate errors. I tested successfully with all these
browsers:

gopher, lynx, elinks, w3m, curl' on Debian.

They are able to access the remote server and files.

try: $> curl gopher://sybershock.com/1/tilde
try: $> lynx gopher://sybershock.com/1/tilde
try: $> gopher gopher://sybershock.com/1/tilde

I suggest you test with 'lynx' browser and 'curl' to see what results.
The server is gophernicus. All of my tests show it works. Are you
trying the link without the '/1/' in it? That will definitely give not
found errors.

It works for me in Lynx, but not elinks.

I'm not manually messing with the URLs in any way; in elinks (0.17.GIT,
f7bbd09), the failing links look like:
gopher://sybershock.com/M/tilde/gopher/10

If I change the M to a 1, it works, but the former is the link type that
elinks sees in the directory list. I assume this is the same problem
that bombadillo is having.

From telnet, the gophermap looks like this:
M6 2023-May-04 18:56 0.7 KB /tilde/gopher/6 sybershock.com 70
M60 2023-May-04 18:56 1.3 KB /tilde/gopher/60 sybershock.com 70
M61 2023-May-04 18:56 1.7 KB /tilde/gopher/61 sybershock.com 70
M7 2023-May-04 18:56 1.3 KB /tilde/gopher/7 sybershock.com 70
M8 2023-May-04 18:56 2.1 KB /tilde/gopher/8 sybershock.com 70
M9 2023-May-04 18:56 3.3 KB /tilde/gopher/9 sybershock.com 70

So the gophermap is definitely being sent with an M selector. I can see
why e.g. elpher would refuse to open an M link, but I'm much less sure
why elinks or bombadillo would give a "not found"; the selector the
client sends should be the same regardless of the link type. I guess at
this point it has to be a client problem.

If you look in newsgroup 'rocksolid.nodes.help' you will see user
'vga256' in Message-ID:
<e0f289a0de4a9e3c882a6774e987621f@news.novabbs.org> is working on
adding a client-side group creation module to Rocksolid Light. This
will allow users to create newsgroups on the local NNTP server.

I encourage PHP maestros to have a look at the most recent threads and
see if they would like to assist. This kind of client-side
functionality would make it possible to build up a decentralized,
reddit-like network based on mostly plain-text messages across NNTP
peers.

If you use Rocksolid Light with the tradspool instead of the sqlite
spool, it is easy to symlink and point gopher and gemini servers at the
message spools. I was working on a way to organize them by date so I
can blog/phlog with my NNTP reader. I had to put it on the back burner
for some other stuff. I hope to get around to finishing it eventually.
