Hi everybody,

My company is developing an image uploader with anonymization and pseudo-anonymization capability. Do we need to register for a UID and produce our own unique study, site and SOP instance UIDs, or is it ok to keep the IDs that originated at the site?

Thank you
Theodora

Hi Theodora

These are separate questions:

1. Do I need to replace the UIDs during de-identification - the short answer is usually yes per PS3.15 Annex E [1], but see also [2].

2. Do I need an org root to generate new UIDs - short answer is no, not if you use UIID generated ones [3][4].

See also discussion of other important issues when replacing UIDs in the MIDI report [5].

Don't forget to sign up for our upcoming de-identification workshop [6].

Hi David,

Thank you so much for the prompt response and information.

We are planning on using dcm4che as part of our implementation. From what I can see, they are generating their own UIDs using the UUID method.

Based on my understanding of the materials you provided, using that utility should suffice and we wouldn't have to generate our own UUIDs. Is my understanding correct?

Thank you
Theodora
