Hello,

Is it allowed to use different transfer syntax within one series? Specifically, can be transfer endoscopy still images (VL) and vidoes (VL) from the same source within one series or must necessarily by DICOM-standard the images have one series UID and the video another?

So far we have not had any problems in practice, but one customer thinks that using only one series is not compliant with the standard. Unfortunately, I can't find the right place in the standard for this topic.

Different SOP Classeses and Transfer syntaxes can belong to the same series: this is what you can find for example for Ultrasound exams, where US Image Storage SOP class instances , with TS=ELE, and US Multiframe Storage SOP Class instances, with TS=JPEG lossy .50, can belong to the same series. The real constraint is that (0008,0060) Modality is a series-level attribute, so in the same series you cannot have SOP instances with different (0008,0060) Modality (for ultrasound images and clips the Modality is always "US", so it is not a problem). This is how our ultrasound scanners work, and we never had problems in more than 20 years, and a dozen of IHE Connect-a-thons.

I understand the standard never says you can mix different SOP Classeses and Transfer syntaxes in the same series just because it does not forbid that!

Regards.
