I access c.l.f with thunderbird via news.individual.net. A couple of
weeks ago I sent the admin at News.individual.net a note asking them to
take a look at c.l.f spam (thinking we had a unique problem; what did I
know?). They sent me a very nice replay saying they were aware of the
problem and were simple overwhelmed by the volume and their tools
couldn't cope with the wide variety of spam messages.

About a week later I no longer saw anything in c.l.f for several days,
so I tried the test message. I don't know what N.I.N did (maybe cut off
google groups?) but it now seems to work. When I fire up thunderbird I
get an alert box saying there are 2xxx unread messages in c.l.f and do I
really want to download them all. I click "yes" and don't get any of
the spam. The problem isn't solved (there are still thousands of spams
out there) but I don't see them. With the decline in volume on c.l.f
over the past couple of years, I'd guess this will kill c.l.f and maybe
even usenet.

news.individual.net isn't free; but 10 euros a year isn't much of a burden.

c.l.f is not the only victim of the influx of spam. c.l.c has
endure a much worse spam event. I use eternal-septmeber as my
news server, and the ES admin is aggressively filtering google
groups. In addition, I've added a few local filter rules to
pan to filter out googlegroup.
