Lots of unreadable spam here in the last few days. Is there a way to keep this out without having one or more moderators?

While I am certainly not current on modern Fortran, I would be happy to help rid the group of this unreadable spam if there is some way I can help.

I don't see any spam at all via eternal-september. I also don't see

It seems to be visible mostly if you use Google groups (like I do) to read the newsgroup. I posted about this onslaught on Fortran discourse and various people are helping out on marking the spam as spam. Given that it is so obviously spam, a smart company like Google should be able to filter that stuff out, you'd say.

For those who care, the spam seems to be about betting on football, and
in the Thai language. There are indications that they move from group
to group once dealt with.

Actually, I tried in the last days to notify those messages as spam (need to click one by one...), but it didn't help...
This is a known problem (several people reported it in other groups), but it seems they don't have a filter for it...

You can select multiple messages in the topic list view and then report all selected ones as spam. I did that for the spam of the last view days, but apparently without any effect...

comp.lang.c has been hit hard by this type of spam.
Someone estimated seeing on the order of 100s/minute
in bursts. All are coming from google groups. Various
filter rules have been proposed for various newsreaders.
I use pan and Eternal September server. For c.l.c have
added the following to my Score file. It seems the
Eternal September is doing a fairly good job of filtering
spam at the moment.

BTW, all of the spam is coming through google groups. Several of the
usenet providers like E-S are discussing stopping peering with google
groups.

For those curious , the discussion takes place at
news.admin.net-abuse.usenet .Some have decided to filter all googlegroups
posts ; like news.ausics.net (see <6529653f$1@news.ausics.net>) .

news.i2pn2.org also does a good job of filtering the spam without filtering
all googlegroups posts. It also doesn't require registration for reading. For
those reading through googlegroups I fear there's no salvation , unless they
decide to start using a newsreader of course. Advice and discussion for
newsreaders takes place at news.software.readers .

Thanks for all the replies. I guess I will dig out Agent 8.0 and try news.i2pn2.org. I haven't used it in years,
but I do have a license.

The spam has stopped coming through individual.net as well. They may
have shut off Google groups too, though a response from their abuse team
suggested they really didn't want to do that.

A couple of issues to keep in mind. news.i2pn2.org occasionally is a bit too
aggressive in its filtering and has eliminated some (few) legitimate posts. I
haven't noticing happening for comp.lang.fortran but it is something to
keep in mind.

In the longer run you may find it useful to visit the thread "Free News
Servers Listing" started in April 2023 on news.admin.peering , just to have
some alternatives.

The first version always gets thrown away.
