Does anyone recall why a zero in column 6 is forbidden as a continuation marker, when all other non-blanks are allowed? Just curious.

Any theories as to why the Ratfor convention of continuing any non-comment line ending in a comma or operator (except not / for data statements) was not adopted? Another bit of curiosity.

I have been deleting over 100 messages per day this past week from the Google Groups version of clf. Any help much appreciated. There is a bulk delete function you may not know about - check the box below the magnifying glass, uncheck any legitimate messages then select the blue ! in a cicle at upper right.

This is one of those trivia questions I like to throw out. I wouldn't
say zero is forbidden, but it is treated as a blank. My guess is that
this was for people who started a statement with a zero in column 6,
though this throws a wrench in the works for people who number their
continuation lines and get to the tenth.

I'll also note that the character in column 6 is required to be one of
those in the "Fortran character set", at least if you're sticking to the
standard.
