For myself, I have found a solution on filtering all articles
with

Content-Transfer-Encoding: base64

Unfortunately, this requires a patched version of slrn because
stock slrn has a bug which makes this impossible, see

If everyone else stops accepting posts from Google Groups, that may prod
them into action. I just subscribed to this group and there were over
170 000 unread messages, after filtering the gmail.com and
googlemail.com ones out I'm down to 3735.
I'm sure that a couple of thousand legitimate posts were deleted (on my
client) along with the approx 165 000 thai-spam posts but them's the breaks.

Not a chance. Google hasn't cared about Usenet for 22 years:

In fact, this Deja News hijacking was tbe first clear indication
(to me) that Do No Evil was a load of Google PR horse hooey.

Other Usenet providers seem to handle spam DOS attacks like this
much better than Google, on shoestring budgets, decades now.

Exactly. I toss Google Gropes blindly, then cull what I can from
the more patient correspondents who followup useful posts here.
