Fwiw, the thread "Thread-safe initialization of static objects" made me
think of the following old paper I read. It was kind of hard to find:

Does anybody else remember reading that paper? Try creating it in pure
C++ for fun. I did an old impl well before C++11, but I cannot find it
right now. Iirc, M lock might require DWCAS.
