hello.
I have been using the Visual Objects 2.7b version for a long time.
I am trying to upgrade to 2.8 sp4, but there is no file provided.
Is there anyone who can provide me with a file?

I'd also like to try converting some 2.7b legacy apps to 2.8. Is a trial version of 2.8 available?

Just a thought, but have you looked at jumping to XSharp (.Net) instead of 2.8? It'll be the same amount of work to go from 2.7 to 2.8SP4 when you can leap to .NET and have so many other advantages, and a modern compiler.
I've just completed moving a large VO2.7b VO application to X# and could not be more pleased. It took me 2 weeks to get something started (with a lot of help), and then after 6 weeks it was awesome. Very frustrating to get started, but I'm a total amateur and part-time programmer.

It is a learning curve for sure with the new xIDE, but there are a lot of helpful people in the club to get you started and you'll be very glad you did - you won't look back once you are used to the environment.
You can download the compiler and everything for free: https://www.xsharp.eu/

See you there!
Jon

Guys,
What Jonathan said.
Visual Objects 2.8 SP4 is over 10 years old and is “dead”. Vulcan has not been maintained since 2015 and is also dead. It does not work with the latest versions of the .Net Framework or Visual Studio.
You can buy these products, but once you have them, you're on your own. There is no support.
The only Xbase language “alive” at this moment is XSharp (X#).

Why should it be the same amount of work 2.7 -> 2.8 vs 2.7 -> X#?
The learning curve on XSharp does seem to be pretty onerous when the purpose is to 'refresh stable legacy apps quickly and efficiently. Adn without unintended conswuences given that "it ain't broke" at the prfesent time.

Your thoughts - and any other contributions - would be very helpful.

X# is trying, but there are too many difficulties such as Vo2Ado and bBrowser.
With the currently compiled 2.7b source, xPorter doesn't show any signs of solving it. It could be because I'm not familiar with it, so please advise.

What kind of difficulties do you mean? For both VO2ADO and bBrwoser,
there are X#-specific versions that you need to use.

Dear Chris.
As a VO 2.7b version user, what should I download from https://www.xsharp.en to use Vo2Ado,browser for X#?

The X# version of bBrowser you can buy it from its vendor at
www.bbrowser.net
For the X# version of VO2Ado, you need to contact its author, Robert.
You have already done that :), so please wait a bit for his response.

Dear Chris
Sorry for asking again and again.
I'm new to X#, so I have a lot to ask.

In the Xide source editor, Hangul (Korea Language) cannot be used (remark contents or messages).
Is there any solution?

It's not a problem at all asking questions of course! But maybe it's
better to post them in our forum in www.xsharp.eu, where other X#
developers can contribute as well!

About VOPP, this is a (fantastic!) tool for VO specifically, but you do
not need it for X#. In X#, you will use a different IDE, either Visual
Studio or XIDE and both have already built in most of the VOPP features
(and much more) already.

For the Korean language, what doesn't work, does the text not appear
correctly on screen, or it doesn't load/save correctly etc? Can you
please send me (I am the author of XIDE) an email at chris at xsharp eu,
with some instructions on how to set up my PC so I can use and test with
the Korean language (apologies, I have no experience on that)?

Chris

Kevin,
If they are truly "stable applications" you just want to refresh maybe it isn't worth the effort, but if there are changes and features you wanted VO2..8 to add for then go for X#.
Things looked very alien when I first tried moving, but some of that was the new error messages (many thousands in my case), and the totally new IDE layout. Yeah, some class and namespace differences, but once you get the hang of it - 2 weeks for me to start making any sense of it - then it gets easier very quickly, and before long you won't want to go back into the VO IDE. I used 2.7b from about 2004 until last September (2022) so it was really out of my comfort zone, but glad I did it. The application will still look exactly the same - unfortunately you (we) are stuck with VO windows, but under the hood a lot is different.

The forum support and evolving compiler are one good reason to move the application over, but more surprising to me was that the X# compiler pointed out dozens of errors in my program- syntax and logic errors, and nonsensical bits of code that the VO compiler had happily included in the .exe without saying anything.
My X# application is so stable now I am sorry I kept the VO 2.7b version alive for so long, and although you say it is just refreshing stable apps, there are many .NET features that you will be able to make use of.

My advice would be to talk to Chris at X# and ask him nicely to help with the first VO-Xport and give you some starting pointers on what to convert first and see how you go. I found it frustrating to begin with but trust me, the fog clears after staring at it for a while.
Then, if you see the potential, for the same cost as VO2.8B4 you can join Friends of X# (FOX)!
