Agreed. My wife and I used to go out to the range regularly when we lived in
New York. Since we moved to Wyoming and literally have a range right in our
back yard, we just don't seem to do it any more. Have vowed to take better
advantage of the range behind the house as well as the county shooting facility
on the other side of Cheyenne. Very nice indoor range and good outdoor
facilities as well.

I mis-typed. I had meant to say the M&P XDS. Not sure where MDS came from...
brain fart in my old age, I suppose.

Shooting is definitely a perishable skill. Need to exercise it often and
regularly. Picked up a few rifles over the winter and a new revolver that I
need to try out. I have no excuse NOT to do more shooting other than
"sometimes life just gets in the way!"

Yes, Springfield. This is what I get for buying a gun and then letting it sit
in the safe for a couple of years. Bad habit of mine, I probably have over a
dozen guns I've bought and haven't shot yet. This is really inexcusable as my
step-son has built a 100 yard range in the fields behind the house. Anyway, I
did like the SPRINGFIELD XD-S and found that even with a fairly short sight
radius I was fairly well able to put the rounds where they needed to go....

Guess I really SHOULD pay more attention to what's in the safes!

A fews ago I got into parting together AR-15's and caught a case of BRD
(black rifle disease.) It started with building a bull barrel 20" target gun
with a full length A2 stock, then realized it wasn't practical other than
carrying to and from the bench. The next build was an SPR/ Mk12 inspired
build with a 1-4x lpvo with a rifle length quad rail. It had a 18" mid
length gas system, still qualified as an HBAR profile. Next in line was a
lightweight M4 copy with a 16" barrel. Nothing fancy, just stock hardware and
iron sights. While shopping I found lots of great deals, and acquired spare
parts that resulted in other builds. I filled up a safe with various
configurations, many have one magazine ran throught them for a function check
or zeroing the sights.

Getting more practice reminded me I have stuff I haven't shot enough in a long
time.

My wife has an AR rifle and an AR pistol... I've actually thought about

I'm an absolute sucker for the A2 profile, as that's what I qualified with "way
back when." I'm in serious danger of building an A2 profile AR. Only a
Herculian effort of will holds me back. The thing that would absolutely put me
over the edge would be a reasonably priced source of wooden furniture. Love
those wood stocked ARs!

The modularity and choice of building options is what makes black rifle
disease interesting. I've never gone low end with regards to buying parts.
I know some folks part together guns with the cheapest parts, then wait until
buying panics occur and cash in oon inflated values and high demand.

I build mine for personal enjoyment. It's sort of like parting together
gaming desktops when I was younger. I would set a bar for price versus
value, and wasn't into keeping up with the Joneses regarding paying a bundle
for the latest greatest parts.

Right now there's several manufacturers building retro A2 rifles. For
awhile FN was maing an A2 with the older military contract roll mark on the
receiver. PSA bought up the H&R brand name when Remingtondissolved it's
assets, and they are making a replica of th H&R produced M16a1 that was made
under contract around 1969-1970. Colt couldn't keep up ,so H&R and GM
Hydramatic were brought in to build extra rifles. The H&R's had some
cosmetic quirks such as how the forge flashing was cleaned up that made them
unique among collectors.

Yeah. :-) Reminds me of when I used to 'build' PC's - it was just assembling
componants. :-)

LOL - that's an idea, I guess... ;-)

Oh wow - I did NOT read the rest of your reply before I started
replying. LOL

But yeah, building for personal enjoyment is the thing! I have a couple
of low end .22 revolvers I plan to play around with changing the finish...

Went out for some trigger therapy a couple of days ago. First time shooting my
IWI Uzi Pro. Man, it is STRANGE shooting a handgun with the rear sight BEHIND
the grip. Very strange. Also had fun with the Sub-2000 and the M&P MDS. Was
pretty much a 9mm sort of day... Ummmm... up until the moment I pulled out the
Raging Bull and started letting go with some .454. Never shot that with .454
at
an indoor range before. Not sure I'll do it again either.

Did notice that after being out of practice for a couple of years my skills
have
diminished. Seems to happen faster in my 63rd year than it did in the past.
Guess that means I just have to practice more. Darn! The hell of it! ;)

Shooting is a perishable skill. Acquiring a sight picture and a smooth
trigger pull isn't easy if everthing feels wrong.
