Cheaper than dirt should change their name to Expensive as f^&$. They will
have stock, but it will be outside the range of only those who want the
product really bad. An item is only worth what someone is willing to pay for
it. I blame the buyers, not the sellers, for pushing up the prices.

Reloading is the best way to go if you shoot alot. You can invest several
hundred in equipment, but it will pay for itself in no time.

Precision ammo is where you really see the savings. You can play with bullet
seating length and different powder types and volumes to tune your ammo
specifically to your rifle. Benchrest shooters are fanatical about it, but
they love the results.

Actually, it's realistically several thousand, and it will take quite a
long while to actually make that "pay for itself". Don't get me wrong,
it's a great idea, and I do it myself, but it's not really that much
cheaper, especially if you factor in the value of your time.

I'm not sure if I mentioned before it depends on the grade of ammo you are
producing. Match grade/ benchrest ammo will save you more money than
recreating 9mm hardball or 55gr .223 for plinking. I used to break even when
I reloaded shotshells, then when I began producing specialty loads such as lig
hter recoiling 1oz loads for the 12 ga, it really paid off because I don't
know of many places you can find them.

Regarding hundreds or thousands, it also depends on how far you go. I don't
run a Dillon progressive. My presses are single stage. If I shot IDPA or
steel challenge, I would probably invest in a larger press than can put out
several hundred rounds an hour. For now, it's smaller batches of ammo for
ladder testing. I would like to dial in a nice 77gr Vmax load that will let
me reach out to the woodchucks and raccoons at the edge of the woods.

Very true, and that wasn't mentioned before... What was said was
"shooting a lot", which probably isn't referencing match-grade ammo.

Yeah, shotshells have always been break-even-at-best, generally
speaking. A 1oz load for a 12 ga doesn't kick enough to even fiddle
with. I generally shoot 1 1/8 oz loads, 3 dram equiv, 1200 fps of #8
(for skeet / sporting clays).

Ahhh, OK again it was a little confusing because originally you said "if
you shoot a lot". If you're shooting "a lot" of reloaded ammo, one
would assume a progressive. And yes, a Dillon XL650 with all the
trimmings will be several thousand. ;-)

A worthy goal there, and not real simple. Also need to have a barrel
with the right spin ratio for those 77's. Good luck!

i would love to do that. I have a nice garage i just need to work on it some with electrical etc but a basic "roll your own" station is a must. What would you recomend for a reloader? I looked into it 5 years ago so im lost on the good brands.

LaRue Stealth 18" barrel with a 1-7 twist. it will stabize up to an 80 grain
pill no problem. I also have a 20" Wilson bull barrel (1-7 twist) that does
the job if I do my part. I have access to property where I can shoot out to
700 yards in the right spot, but realisitically I will never see a shot over
300.

I have a Savage 110FP with a factory barrel and trigger that would place 5 sho
ts of 167 gr .308 Hornady spire points under 3/4" at 100 yards. That is from
bags while shooting prone, so it's more or less what the gun can do, and not t
he shooter.

RCBS makes a good starter kit with nearly everything you need. It's a single
stage press, however I would go that route before getting involved with the
higher rate progressives at first.

With a single stage it's about batch processing. Pick one session for
cleaning and re-sizing your brass. Another session to trim and uniform the
primer pockets. Another session to prime, then the final session to charge
the cases, then cap and seat the bullets. A progressive with move each case
to the next process each time you pull the lever, however getting everything
tuned up and timed is not something a novice should try.

If I can find a good price on components and buy in bulk, I can create a
superior quality round than I can buy at cheap ammo prices.

For general plinking I do not get as meticulous, yet yield better ammo than I
can pay for at a similar price. I follow the manual and yield a safe load at
the velocity I want it at, then crank away at the press.

A pmr 30 fires a .22wmr (rimfire) round. These are not reloadable. If
you're really geeky you can save the empty cases, push out the rim, and
recycle them into bullet jackets for larger caliber bullets. This is way
more intensive a process for the regular shooter. RCBS made their way into
reloading during metal shortages during WWII by recycling .22LR cases.

I just purchased a keltec PMR30 lol.. 30 rounds of 22 mag and are fireball spitters.. great for woodchucks.. been slammed with work and have not had time to even log into my own bbs to check mail hahah. I think i am going to grab a rugar 57... my buddy had a ps90 and a fn57 and man it was a great round to shoot even though expensive haha.

I guess it depends on what you want to get out of the hobby. Asking that
question is like asking what the best car is, or the best anything. Everyone
you ask is going to have a different opinion. I use single station presses,
one is RCBS Reloader Special II, the other is a CH. My shotgun presses (as
most are) are turret types, both are MEC presses. These work fine for me as I
don't load or shoot a large quantity so one stage at a time, one round at a
time works well. Those with an interest running more towards quantity and
(slightly) less toward quality would probably be better served with a turret or
progressive press.

I think the most important factor is.... Get what you can afford right now,
use it, get into the swing of the hobby and then upgrade as you identify your
particular needs. You'll always be able to sell the equipment you've outgrown
as long as it's not abused.

.... The number you have dialed...Nine-one-one...has been changed.
