Same! I think there was a site called cheapbytes or something. I'd order distros for a few bucks a pop on CD and try my hand at installing them.

my city was really slow on upgrading their broadband.
i had to run my bbs at a friend's house across the street. and that was dsl.
I couldn't get anything but dialup in my area around the early 2000's.

i had to find creative ways to get things to play with.
now i'm too old to play with things.
