Hey!

So I used to run a Remote Access 0.04a BBS back in 92-93. One line, some doors and Fidonet. Kinda faded away mid-90s as other stuff took more attention.

I checked back in a few weeks back and was amazed to see how not only are BBSes still around, but seem to be getting more attention (and sometimes users!) than in quite some time.

I plan on running a board on a Windows 2022 VPS, but to start I want to make some connections and do some learning. It's astonishing what's possible now. The idea of having a 20 node board running easily on relatively inexpensive hardware or server space is giving me the warm fuzzies (not that they'd be busy, but just the ability to have them at all).

Looking forward to getting to know you folks!

Chris

Welcome back to BBSes! Your story is much like many of us from "back in
the day" who came back all these years later. While the number of users
is reduced, it's still a LOT of fun. Hope you join us!

.... Gone crazy, be back later, please leave message.

Pretty much the same scenario we all went through :-)

Its nice being able to meld the coolness of yesterdays tech using todays tech.

I was in pretty much a tech desert in the 90's se even then my call volume wasnt too good so anything is cool for me :) It's always been a cool little hobby for me anywway :) Have fun man, see you in the sysop forums soon!

Wasn't Remote Access at version 1.11 by then? I remember because I ran a Remote Access BBS from 1994-2000, and I think I started with version 2.02 in 1994.

I'm not sure what happened to the versions post 0.04a. I barely had FrontDoor and RA working, thanks to a lot of help from the guy who ran the node upstream from me on FidoNet. I do remember there were a lot of big changes going on at the time, version changes were definitely part of that. I loved RA, but was looking at moving to Waffle because I really liked what I was seeing on Usenet, but that was orders of magnitude more complex than FidoNet/FD/RA.

Eventually there were hardly any calls, I got married, and I was working at a few local bars as a Dj so focus shifted.

Welcome! I took my dial-up BBS down in 2001, at that point I was mail
only since my callers dropped off. In 2005, I ran into Synchronet and
had just saved a machine from the dumpster at work - a Celeron 533, 256
MB of RAM and Windows 2000. The notion that I could have a web site, FTP
site, mail server and BBS on cast-off hardware got me back into BBSing.

The allure of making the most of hardware appeals to a lot of us here.

.... Change nothing and continue consistently
