You *could* ... but short of HTTPS or SSH only, you're going to see
hurdles to anyone using your system.

For HTTPS it's pretty easy, easier if you use a 3rd party integration.
For SSH/BBS, then you'll need to write your own code to integrate with a
payment processor, and read up on the storage/security requirements
(PCI). Even then, you may not get a payment processor that allows you
to complete transactions with remote clients over SSH.
