Ah, one of "those" guys. :-) Same here. I rather dislike the "just
install it straight from the intarwebz" method.

That, or the current version you're downloading is (subtily) different from
the one you had - in the case of drivers possibly creating problems with
other software that depends on the driver.

Off-site as in not putting all your eggs in the same basket (read:
building). Drop that basket (fire, flooding, hurricane, theft, etc.) and
all your eggs will be destroyed at the same time. :-|

You do not need to put it in "the Cloud" (although that seems to be the "in"
thing nowerdays). Just physically storing one of those drives in some
location a number of miles away (work, friends, bank) would already do the
trick.

With that kind of luck you ought to go to Vegas and roll some night
for an afternoon.

That's exactly it. The new stuff will probably have more bells and
whistles one doesn't need. It probably has been converted to
adware/spyware plus the problem you mentioned.

The only stuff on my comp that would drive me to tears to lose would
be - again - my music fiiles. Those are most important to me over
any other. Ant did convince me of getting those copied and into my
fireproof safe at least.

Merle,

Alas, it only seems to work on 'puters and the like. Like when someone is
having a problem, I come to near to it and it suddenly does exactly what its
supposed to do ... (funny how the user actually taking notice of which keys
he's pressing and which (error) messages he's getting as a result makes most
of the problems go away. :-) ).

> The new stuff will probably have more bells and whistles one

The good-old "feature creep". :-(

> It probably has been converted to adware/spyware plus

Isn't being able to spy on your customers an /absolutily needed/ feature ?
I can't imagine how those greybeards from before the intarwebz where able to
develop any software without it. They must have used magic or something
like that !

> Ant did convince me of getting those copied and into my

Protecting your first backup that way is good. But what are you than doing
with your second backup ? Not putting it in the same basket^hsafe I
hope... :-p

And please do forgive me my poking there. Its just that when you have data
that means that much to you than I really want to make you aware that
keeping all copies in the same location isn't really all that safe.

Rudy Wieser

Enough already!!!

Is there no end to BACKING UP?

At my age, I think the time left to me is in my favor as to all the
different cataclysmic happenings that could happen to my domicile. I
believe Castastrophe's chances of demolishing my treasures during my
remaining time is very limited. I have copies of the echocardiograms,
X-rays and body scans to back up this assumption. :o(

Please let me slowly rot away in peaceful, ignorant denial.

You already told us you have /three/ external drives you backup to.
The question was/is just where you store those drives.

But my apologies. I won't mention it again.
