I just tried to look at Apple maps (maps.apple.com) on my RasPiOS
machine and got nothing but advertising from the Apple store.

Is it possible to view Apple maps on a Pi? I normally use Google
maps and wanted to see how they compare. Neither chrome nor firefox
seem able to display Apple's map website on a Pi4.

Thanks for reading,

Seems like Apple Maps is not like Google Maps or Open Street Map an
accessible map system via browser but via own programm. I can use the
onboard application to view something but not Firefox e.g.

I wonder how accurate they are - ISTR a few years ago they revamped
them, and missed out quite a few significant UK cities

I'm in the USA, so YMMV

Ran across a page that suggested doing a duckduckgo.com search for a
business in the region of interest. Apparently duckduckgo.com has a
link to apple maps that works. One can then peruse the neighborhood,
get directions and bring up satellite images. Tried it, it works.

As to accuracy, apple maps seems to beat google maps, at least in
one very narrow way:

Using google maps to plan a bike route resulted in a path through
unpaved private land and even ploughed fields. Using apple maps
the route was realistic, sticking to public way that was paved.

I'm really surprised how idiotic google maps turned out to be.
Missing a recent change is understandable, but the ploughed field
had been there for a very long time.

Thanks for writing,

They are 100% accurate, any errors come from the user holding the device
wrong.

Do they not contain mapmaker's copyright traps ? I'd expect that on
everything except open street map.

Sorry Steve, I was parodying the late Jesus Jobs and his iPhone antenna
design screw up.

The original Apple Maps replaced Google Maps on Apple devices and it was
dire. As MacRumours said "At launch, Apple Maps was heavily criticized
for inaccuracies and errors, leading Tim Cook to apologize and promise
to improve the service." That was in 2012.

Does anyone really think they have not been heavily improved in the last
12 years?

Last time I used Apple Maps as a splat nav I found it to be
sufficiently accurate for the wbo and to provide better turn-by-turn than
google, identifying turns by features - roundabout, T-junction, lights .. -
where google just gives distances.

Good old Apple. If there's an established way of doing something (a map that
can be displayed in any browser on any OS) they will do it a different way
and lock people in to having to install an app, even if it is accessed via a
web site.
