It's tax time, and I'm filling out state and federal tax forms.
The chrome browser seems to work, but I'm wondering if there
might be other choices worth trying since chrome has a great
deal going on besides editing, none of which I need or want.

I've tried qpdfview from the Accessories menu. It works on some
files but not others.

Any alternate suggestions would be appreciated!

It turns out qpdf does work, with an odd quirk: When downloaded and
opened, the forms don't display correctly. If edited, saved and opened
again, the form displays OK. It's still unclear how the forms will
print, but it's a start.

Thanks for reading, any alternatives to qpdfview are still welcome!

I have a custom Python script for that. I already have a database for
managing my time and billing, as well as GST, expenses and depreciation,
so it was easy enough to pull out the right numbers for that, and
superimpose them (suitably laid out) on top of the PDF pages as
background.

I found with qpdfview that the forms would print but the text I added to
them was not on the form. I had better luck with evince, but your mileage
may vary.

This was with US IRS forms. In past I actually had trouble getting them to
save and print correctly when using adobe on a Windows machine.

I've used Okular for the past few years to fill out tax forms. I download
them from irs.gov, fill them out, print them, and mail them in. So far,
it's worked like a champ.

I managed to finish the job with qpdfview, but will try okular.

For whatever reason, you seem to have to "show forms" before okular will
allow you to edit them. Irritating; otherwise seems to work.
