The names are so dissimilar that I knew right away they were
unrelated... <sarcasm>.

wtf is it with GuhNoo thieves? Has the Stallman parasite gene infected
all of them?

So they can't even appropriate the name? Why do you seem to think
FOSS is all about infringing on commercial software, when it's merely
an alternative? You're free to pay M$ and Adobe. You're free to
tolerate the bloat. I'm happy without it.

They can't, but they do, likely because they know legal challenges are
too costly. A big company would never allow such blatant name-copy usage.

> Why do you seem to think
> FOSS is all about infringing on commercial software, when it's merely
> an alternative?

Memtest86+ sure sounds like it infringes on the name Memtest86.

And if you read the memory test algorithms they run, it's a virtual
clonefest.

Memtest86+ (open source) runs 10 tests per loop:
https://memtest.org/readme#individual-test-descriptions

Memtest86 (closed source) runs 13 tests per pass
https://www.memtest86.com/tech_individual-test-descr.html

The 10 tests they share seem virtually identical, and they're even
listed in the same order. So I'm wondering if:

* they're borrowing from each other without attribution.

* if Memtest86+ (open source) gets their test ideas from Memtest86
(closed source) and just attempts to duplicate them.

* if Memtest86 (closed source) lifts code from Memtest86+ and uses it as
is, with no alterations (which would put it in violation of the GPL).

* someone at Memtest86 (closed source) likes the "gock" of someone at
Memtest86+ (open source) and doesn't want to fight legally.

Non-argument. Your machine is plenty powerful enough to negate most any
bloat differences between MS Office and LibreOffice (which I'm not sure
exist. I run Office 2003, and all LibreOffice versions from way back to
today are extremely bloated and slow compared to it. Don't know about
LO vs more recent MSO).

Office 2003 is outdated. Maybe that's your secret, you keep using old
Winblows versions and apps. I use contemporary software. It's why I
switched to Linux, Win12 was destined to be my M$ dead end, the
version that my box can realistically keep running. With Linux,
there's no dead end, because the upgrades will keep supporting my, by
then, aging hardware.

Win12 will NOT be a dead-end for a machine like yours. Nor will Win13.
Or 14, I would bet. Like I said before, keep your machine around for 10
years to prove me right.

I ran my i5-750 machine for 12 years, Win7 through Win10. I'm an
impatient person, and I had no problems adjusting to the perceptible
slowdown of 10 from 8.1.

Your sadness is misplaced.

It's me and a few others (and sometimes you) versus untold numbers of
drooling, lying haters (and sometimes you) demonizing Microsoft.

I can't believe you actually said that 13 will be a good upgrade for
my current hardware. Even with replacing the RAM to get 64+ GB I bet
it'd be demanding on a mid-range CPU from 2020.

64GB memory to run Win13?

You are out of your mind.

In terms of supporting what I'd want to do with it, it's about right.
32 should be sufficient for 12, although it remains to be seen whether
more will end up being desired. I won't care, though, since I won't
have it.

A couple of the articles hint at a brain dead version for older computers

all out on AI.

including you. And they're all making shit up, and hedging their
speculation with 'if' and 'may' and 'could'. It's irresponsible
"journalism". Not a single MS source says anything about an NPU being
required.

"Unsurprisingly, the big focus for Hudson Valley [DFS: codename for next
Windows version] is on next-generation AI experiences that are being
woven and integrated throughout the OS, much of which will likely
require new NPU hardware to function."

"The report [DFS: from Windows Central - previous link] stops short of
saying the next version of Windows will flat-out require an NPU, but
many of the features could be restricted to that hardware. It’s unlikely
that Microsoft would go as far as to require an NPU to use Windows 12,
as we’re just starting to see that hardware hit the market."

"DirectML with NPU support will be in developer preview in early 2024"

"Just as Windows 11 requires a TPM 2.0 (or higher) hardware module from
your PC, Windows 12 may require an NPU."

Just hearing "AI" all day and night already grates on my nerves.

The issue is not only about hearing AI all day and night but using it,
too. Right now, I can't find any search engine without AI and it's a
real pain in the ass. When I'm looking for something the fucking AI
search engine tells me: "your search is meaningless, you are looking for
this instead and we have more results". And I can find a lot of things I
really don't care without being able to find what I really want.

Personally I think AI in the sense of ChatGPT and LLM is a bubble that may
burst with as disastrous an effect as dotcom but that's where MS, Google,
FB and the other players are now. Nvidia is raking in the profits as the
demand for their GPUs grows. Google and others are creating their own
chips.

Besides the direct hardware costs running the data centers has upstream
costs.

I bet you didn't even get excited about multi-colored tulip bulbs.
