Old school shooter...looks like fun, I might actually break out of my
moratorium on gaming and buy this one.

On the one hand, I generally don't like the Postal series; the humor
(e.g., it has a dildo launcher) is too simplistic and crass for my
taste , and I generally am not a fan of 'retro shooters' (see my rant
in an earlier post about companies milking nostalgia for easy sales).

On the other hand... the gameplay does look fun and - sophomoric and
misogynistic weapons and jokes aside - the levels and monsters look
imaginative and fun. I'm not crazy about some of the 'retro' graphics
but its not so excessive as in other games and can mostly be ignored.

Were this devs to improve its visuals (abandon the retro sytling) and
switch to a less-awful IP, this would probably be a must-buy for me.
Any game where you can dual-wield gatling guns is gonna be a lot of
fun. But the combination of the "Postal" brand and the faked
'old-school' graphics will probably push it to the 'maybe I'll play if
its cheap/free' list. Which is a shame, because - while I despise
their over-the-top political-incorrectness, I've always had some
respect for Running With Scissor's skill as developers and I'd love to
see them put their talents to less distasteful titles. But it doesn't
look like this is going to be one of those.

The politically-incorrect nature of the Postal series is something
I've actually admired about the franchise (from afar, I've never
actually played one of the games simply because at the times I was
interested, the asking price was too high for a single player game).

That sort of humor is definitely an acquired taste... It's something
like cheesy horror films... there are very few horror films that I
can enjoy on the basis of them actually being a good movie, but that's
because my definition of a good movie was formed around a certain
checklist of attributes at some point in time. I have a friend that
is an amateur film maker but a pro/semi-pro musician, who specializes
in film scoring. Once he explained some things to me about the horror
genre from a music and audio perspective, my thoughts shifted from
"how can anyone watch those piece of crap movies" to being able to at
least, to some degree, "get" why there are people who are so into
them. As I said above, it's simply an acquired taste that one either
decides they are interested enough to acquire, or they don't.

Not that I'm going to spend one moment trying to get anyone here to
start appreciating the humor of the Postal series, I'm just saying
that the reasons that variety of humor is popular is probably not as
juvenile or shallow as it appears on the surface...

....and to me the value of politically-incorrect humor is only made
greater by the increasingly rediculous trends by mainstream societal
sheep that are locked in perpetual momentum in the other direction. I
appreciate when a game developer has the balls to do something
different.

I've no real opposition to jokes that cross the boundary of good
taste; I've been known to be purposefully vile and shocking in order
to elicit a smile myself, so it would be hypocritical of me to do so.
And I got some enjoyment out of the original "Postal" and (to a lesser
degree) "Postal 2" because it was over-the-top in its crassness. But
at this point, the series is using its foul language and bad jokes not
to actually say anything but simply because it's part of the brand;
it's monetizing its crudity, and - at least to me - it's not funny or
fresh anymore. It's become so excessive and so calculatedly commercial
that it leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

And, like you, I'm not trying to convince others of the righteousness
of my subjective tastes, just explaining why this isn't a game that -
despite some obvious strengths - isn't likely to result in a purchase.
I really do feel the devs should spread their wings and try something
new, because they have some talent and it would probably benefit them
with a wider audience.

I did buy it by the way, just haven't had time to load it up yet. I'll
report back on whether the dildo launcher physics are realistically
modeled or not :)

Looks fun, but a bit adult to be playing around the kids, so it'd have
to be relegated to nights. That considerably lowers it's value to me.
I might consider it for sub $5.

It's fascinating to me to learn anyone on Usenet has youngsters, I
thought we were all like 50+ and kids (if I had them) would probably
be finishing college by now :)

Do you have a headphone solution? There's probably nothing in this
game really (that I've seen yet) that would display on the screen that
isn't regularly visible on mainstream TV. A plumbers crack here and
there maybe..

I personally can't stand to game with headphones. I use Seinheiser
HD650s regularly for music production, but that's because they are
open-back headphones and have a very specific purpose in finding
mixing flaws (not because I enjoy wearing them). So, for gaming I
wont wear headphones except for MP games like PUBG or other battle
royale genre games where fast detection of the direction of sniper
fire matters greatly. And in that case, I use a set of wired earbuds
(the kind with good low end) which alleviates any long-term use
comfort issues.

If you use headphones so the audio doesn't give you away, you should
be no worse off than if you watched the video above.

For me it's an "in small doses" casual game where I will jump in, play
for 20 mins then close and go back to it later.. which is fine, I
don't like games that want to consume my free time.
