http://www.defcon.org/ loaded fine. Shouldn't SM automatically go to
secured connection?

You mean https://defcon.org/ loaded fine? It did for me although I had
the same problem as you with the other version.
I though the site was responsible for what happens with a http://
connection, most commercial sites automatically switch to https if they
encounter that. My guess is that this is an ill-configured website.

Some of the sites I use do not offer https at all and I'd be rather
peeved if my browser refused to access them, there's an addon for anyone
who wants that.

Yes. http://defcon.org/ did not. Firefox v116.0.2 and Edge v115
autoredirected to https just fine.

You're understanding of it is back to front:

The plain http version is not working properly.

Seamonkey correctly reports that it's not working properly.

Silly hand-holding browsers like Firefox and Edge decide they will try
to "help you" by loading a page you didn't ask for.

That's why Seamonkey is much better for serious work on websites.

It's one of the few browsers that won't try to "fix" a bad url for you,
e.g. by adding 'www' in front of what you asked for.

It has started working for me now, although before I got the error like
you did.

Are you sure about that?

Look at Edit -> Preferences -> Browser -> Location Bar and "Unknown
Locations".
The traditional setting is to have both options checked.

That's what I thought. Maybe he meant other browsers don't
allow to NOT do that (I have no idea if any do or not).

Ah, on mine both are unticked, maybe from years ago.
At least Seamonkey allows you to turn off the hand holding.
I spent some time trying to stop FF second guessing my urls and gave up
after about an hour.

There must be a FF setting for this, something under about:config
Got it.
Toggle browser.fixup.alternate.enabled

How did I find it? I opened about:config under Seamonkey, then
positioned to the browser.* entries and started playing with the
Location Bar setting I detailed to see what changed. That one did.
A further check under Firefox shows that the about:config option is
there as well.

Same for me (2.53.17). I guess it fills in stuff like www and
..com, but not https instead of http.

It's not supposed to go there automatically.

The plain http version of the 'defcon' site is not configured to jump
from one to the other.

Many big sites set a redirect, but 'defcon' have not, maybe they don't
want one, or maybe they are a bit clueless.

But most non-seamonkey browsers will decide you wanted the https version
and take you there.

A web master could decide to have two completely different sites, one
for plain http and one for https, this was common a few years back where
an e-commerce site would have a catalogue with pictures using plain
http, but then would jump to 'secure.example.com' if you tried to buy
something.

That's a good find, but I think you'll see other hand holding behavior
in FF, e.g. "search from the address bar" or using a special port (when
it's down), there's then the issue of stripping part of the url from
what you see in the address bar trying to make the site address look
more pleasing. Try out some addresses that you know won't work.

waiting, then went to http://www.defcon.org and said waiting, then said
error.

Without safe mode, in my preferences I have mixed content warnings but
no TLS warnings. Supported TLS 1.2 1.3

I have an old ublock-origin installed.

Scrub that last message completely. I was using the wrong computer via
ssh, so an old seamonkey. :-(
