I want to mount a folder on my NAS server from a LM system
..
I tried this in a terminal first:
sudo mount -t cifs -O username=xxx,password=xxxxxx
//192.168.0.42/Media/music /mnt/music

But I get mount: bad usage.

I'm not really sure of what to do, and have googled it but can't or
don't know what I want.

So what should I have done.
Thanks

Update:
I tried this in a terminal:
sudo mount -t username=xxx,password=xxxx //192.168.0.42/Media/music.

This time it produced:
mount: //192.168.0.42/Media/music: can't find in fstab

So again, what line do I put in fstab.

Thanks

Thanks, I tried that but I get permission denied, so I guess it is my
NAS server that is giving me that

They use a small "o" for the Options in the mount command here:

https://man7.org/linux/man-pages/man8/mount.8.html

-O, --test-opts opts

-o, --options opts <=== you want this one

You are very close. However, we know that runtime environments are not
the same as boot time environments, so you just know the /etc/fstab will be "trouble".

https://linuxize.com/post/how-to-mount-cifs-windows-share-on-linux/

sudo mount -t cifs -o username=rob,password=123456 //WIN_SHARE_IP/<share_name> /mnt/win_share

I tested using LMDE6 VM and Win11 share. Command completed OK. Having <share_name>/path seems to work.
My share was actually "RAMDrive" and "music" is just a folder under RAMDrive. Using an IP seems
to work more of the time, than my server name.

bullwinkle@LMDE6TST:~$ sudo mount -t cifs -o username=bob,password=123 //192.168.333.444/ramdrive/music /mnt/music
bullwinkle@LMDE6TST:~$

However, the /etc/fstab was not nearly as cooperative. Setting this
up is very much like NFS 3.0 at work a long time ago, fiddle/plonk,
fiddle/plonk, endless shifting of useless options...

Here is a working command (command should be one line, I split it to fit on the screen better):

/etc/fstab

# Mount the music directory, which is underneath the RAMDrive share, as /mnt/music
//192.168.333.444/ramdrive/music /mnt/music cifs
vers=1.0,credentials=/home/bullwinkle/.smbcredentials,uid=bullwinkle,gid=bullwinkle 0 0

This is the info for the .smbcredentials file

bullwinkle@LMDE6TST:~$ ls -al .smbcredentials
-rw------- 1 bullwinkle bullwinkle 56 Mar 7 06:53 .smbcredentials

bullwinkle@LMDE6TST:~$ cat .smbcredentials
username=rob
password=123
domain=WORKGROUP

That allows your credentials to not be in the public-readable /etc/fstab
and instead be in the separate 600 file in your home directory.

I have the following in /etc/fstab:
//192.168.1.2/Share /home/joerg/syn cifs
credentials=/etc/samba/credentials,uid=1000,gid=1000,iocharset=utf8,vers=3.0
0 0

and in /etc/samba/credentials I have
username=uname
password=pw

This works on my new, fast PC, on my old one the network stack is not
loaded when fstab is being processed so I have to say
sudo mount -a
on the old one after booting up.

Maybe, but how exactly did you try?
Do you have a folder :
/home/RobH/Music-NAS

If you want to try a command it is a little different.

sudo mount -t cifs -o username='yourusername',password='yourpassword
',uid=1000 //192.168.0.42/Media/music ~/Music-NAS

Pay attention to ' ' which are not used in fstab.

you didn't give a full mount directive; so mount was looking for the
"//server/share" as an entry in /etc/fstab.

The "correct syntax" (based on a quick google, since I've not done
SMB/CIFS in forever) for manually mounting should be this:
mount -t cifs -o user/pass //server/share /mount/point

Do note that if your username and/or password include shell-reserved
characters, you'll probably have to encompass them in quotation marks.

Thanks Paul, but I am getting permission denied when I use this:
//192.168.0.22/Media/music /mnt/Media/music
credentials=/home/rob/smbcredentials,uid=1000.

I am guessing that is to do with my NAS server

I have this in my /etc/fstab file:

//192.168.0.22/Media/music /mnt/Media/music cifs
credentials=/home/rob/smbcredentials,uid=1000,gid=1000 0 0

When I do
sudo mount -a
it returns
mount error(2): not such file or directory
Refer to the mount.cifs(8) manual page (e.g man mount.cifs and kernel

My desktop machine moounts my TrueNAS thus:

#TN MUSIC
#<file system> <mount point> <type> <options>
#192.168.1.194:/mnt/mainraid/music /media/music_tn nfs rw,user,nfsvers=3
0 0
truenas.local:/mnt/mainraid/music /media/music_tn nfs rw,user,nfsvers=3
0 0
#TN

Note that I am using NFS - network file share - not CIFS.

I hashed out the explicit IP address in favour of the name but seeing as
my NASbox is static, I could go back to using 192. etc.

I don't have any permission problems.

I tried a nfs share and added this to /etc/fstab:

//192.168.0.22/Media/music /mnt/Media/music nfs user=xxxx,password=xxxx
rw,,user,nfsver=3

then did sudo mount -
mount: /etc/fstab: parse error at line 14:

What is wrong with the said line.

Now why did I include "vers=1.0" in my sample FSTAB command.

That's for an SMBV1 NAS.

I have tried this among other things:
192.168.0.42:/Media/music /music nfs
rsize=8192,wsize=8192,timeo=14,intr

from here:
http://ftp.pasteur.fr/mirrors/centos-vault/3.3/3.3/docs/html/rhel-sag-en-3/s1-nfs-mount.html

but still getting erro measages about the mount point not eisting, or
parse errors, or incorrect option, aaargh!

I think you have an unnecessary "//" in front of your IP address:

//192.168.0.22/Media/music /mnt/Media/music nfs user=xxxx,password=xxxx
rw,,user,nfsver=3

whereas in mine it simply says:

#<file system> <mount point> <type> <options>
192.168.1.194:/mnt/music /media/music_tn nfs rw,user,nfsvers=3 0 0

Note that I have now edited my string simply to fit it on one line for
better readability.

You showed that you see this error:
> mount: /etc/fstab: parse error at line 14:

If line 14 is indeed the line with the two leading slahes, try removing
them.

Maybe get it working without creds, then add them later (temporarily doing
so removes an area of potential confusion).

This is what I have now in /etc/fstab:
192.168.0.42:/Media/music /mnt/Media/music nfs
credentials=/home/rob/./smbcredentials,rw,nfsver=3 0 0

So what i the incorrect mount option there.

Thanks

NFS wouldn't use the (samba) "credentials" directive.

Aah, fair do's then.
So what should I use , because I just tried this:
sudo mount 192.168.0.42:/Media/music nfs
username=xxxx,password=xxxx,rw,nfsver=3

And that returns:
mount.nfs: an incorrect mount option was specified

thanks

<file system> space <mount point> space <type> space <options>

Where are you telling it to mount? I think you're doing it at the bash
prompt which is slightly different from fstab, I think I remember, but the
OS will still need to know where to mount your remote file system. Perhaps
something like this will suffice:

<file system> space <mount point> space <type> space <options>

$ sudo mount 192.168.0.42:/Media/music ~/music nfs
username=xxxx,password=xxxx,rw,nfsver=3

so that's

<file system>
192.168.0.42:/Media/music

space

<mount point>
~/music

space

<type>
nfs

space

<options>
username=xxxx,password=xxxx,rw,nfsver=3

I'm labouring the nomenclature here because I remember *endlessly*
muddling up my fstab and, when I evetually got it right, I added that many
comments to it for next time, and it did then become easier. Honestly!
Stick with it, you'll get there.

When I run:
sudo dmesg
it returns:
CIFS: Attempting to mount \\192.168.0.42\Media
CIFS: VPS: BAD NETWORK NAME
CIFS: VPS: cifs mount failed w/return code = -2
nfs: unknown parameter 'username'

So I removed 'username' then tried again, but this time it was
nfs: unknown parameter 'password'.
I removed 'password and ran sudo mount -a
for the cifs mount I got:
mount error(2): No such file or directory
and for the nfs mount I got:
mount.nfs: mounting 192.168.0.42:/Media/music failed reason given by
server No such file or directory.
Then I realised what the problem was after I checked my NAS server nfs share
The path should be 192.168.0.42:/mnt/Media/music. Doh!!!

Now I have the local folder mounted on my NAS drive

Gordon Bennet! I can't believe that I missed that

Thanks
