No programs open, just the desktop on the screen and I start to type: a
white box appears and keystrokes are displayed in it. [Return] makes it
go away again.

What is it? I don't recall seeing it before in years of using mint.

I'd also never noticed it. It just seems to be a quick way of finding
anything on your desktop, whether it be a file or a folder.

Yes! That's it. I can type the name of a file, hit return and it's
opened. Could be handy!

Rather useless feature imho. Unless a user has an extremely cluttered
desktop, in which case said user should perhaps get organized.
