Uh...
The post was relative to Macrium Reflect ***Free*** which will be
discontinued.

'Free' version of V9 won't be available.
V9 will be available in the 'Home' version - trial ware or fee
Trial version upon expiration is different than v8 free versions.
"Once your trial ends, you will have the ability to restore previously
created backup files, but all other features will be blocked."

I began to try that software for the first time about a month ago, and I
saw that notice, and so I uninstalled it. What's the next best thing
(besides my current "system" of copying folders to external storage)?

Version 7 Free works just fine for me. IMO, upgrading when not
necessary is a waste of time and energy.

As Paul noted, the v8.x free editions(even the 8.x fee based edition)
will continue to run, like they do now, just no longer updated, supported
not really an issue - no support for free versions).
- I'm using a paid 8.0 version build 7175 on this device. On my near
ancient Surface 3, the free 8.0 version, build 7279[1]
One can still obtain the 'Free' editions from 3rd party sites(still need
to register(email for install/registration code, assign license #)
- e.g 3rd party MajorGeeks{2]
Multiple free old versions may be available on other sites, though the
only earlier free v8's I've used without incident or failure(image create
and restore, and only on the Surface device) in the last year are builds
..6560, .6584, .7097, .7175. I also use ATI 2020 perpetual on the
Surface(it's image is smaller and a few minutes faster).

[1] 8.0.7279 is what the program and installer indicate, but never did
see a .7279 in the release notes.
<http://updates.macrium.com/reflect/v8/v8.1.7401/details8.1.7401.htm>
- The digital signature for .7279 is Jan 10, 2023
Not seeing in release notes, might be the difference in free or fee build
numbers or just guessing - possibly a timing from download/install date
vs. me looking at release notes. The release notes does show the
short-lived(1 week only] v 8.0.7280 released on Jan 10th 2023.

[2] MajorGeeks provides 8.0.7279 full 175 MB installer, other sites may
only provide the 5MB stub installer.
If downloading the full installer, install steps:
- When running the downloaded file, in the options on the top, change
from the HOME Edition to FREE
- Click Options, then choose Download Installer and PE Components
- Uncheck Run Installer when downloaded
- After the download is complete, run the setup to install

What I don't know, once 8.0 EOL is reached, if the ability to
register/obtain registration-install code also ceases
- i.e. a possible inability to reinstall unless the code was previously
obtained, or worst case - not capable of being installed.

They do make some interesting claims.

For example, they could not find a "Con" for Clonezilla. Only "Pro" datapoints.

And they didn't test DriveImage XML. What is this world coming to.
You're supposed to test that one, because it functions
as an "anchor" for one end of your graphs. I don't think that
one uses a compressor for its data.

I'm of the opinion, that when it comes to backup software,
you have to do your own tests. Because ultimately, when the
shit hits the fan, you're the guy that cleans up the mess.

You can start with a "speed" table, and work from there.
The table is about 30% down the page.

It's been a few years since I tested DI-XML(Runtime.org product)
A quick check shows the the latest version was in 2016 - V2.60
They do have a free version
The fee based commercial version(not sure if same version)is $100US for 5
licenses, 2 incidents or support and 1 yr for updates)
- no clue what 'updates' mean.
If one looks at all their products, the release dates are all more than a
few years old.
- Small company? No periodic updates? Not sure where based US(Hawaii)
or Europe(Germany,England, France)

I asked the same question in alt.comp.freeware. Chances are you can
continue to use 8.x free for a while. AFAIK 6.x and 7.x free still work
as well. It's not like the software will suddenly stop working.

For the time being, W10 and W11 have the same technical requirements.

For W10 and W11, 6.3.1865 is the minimum version (will have no "error 9").
Any version 7 should be good enough for the "free" full backups.

*******

If they're still available, some of the old versions are stored
this way on their site. You have to know a version number to try,
to generate a valid link to one (guessing would take too long).
I expect these will be removed, when the Free interval is closed
for good.

Approx 100MB each (the WADK to prepare a rescue disc a particular
way, is a larger download). These just put the basic backup stuff
on your C: drive, and making the rescue disc is a separate issue.
But making the rescue CD is important, and is not a task to neglect.
Under the circumstances, you should make your rescue CD immediately
after installing this on C: . My rescue CD is on a USB stick (a V7.2)

The current company/name, Hasleo, has been around since at least 2021.
The prior company, EasyUEFI Development Team, since 2012.
=> Apparently one company, Hasleo, buying or merging with
another(EasyUEFI DT).
The first version of the BU application which seems to coincide with the
Hasleo branding was released in May 2021(V1.0), the 10th version(V3.4)
was released in Feb 2023.

The first two versions need patches to ensure a feature option was
present for restoring an image to the original Windows location and
restoring a partition to its original location.
- maybe the original locations were the defaults, just not feature
selectable, if not one would wonder where the restoration resided<g>

From V1.9 to current V3.4 updates it looks like ongoing
updates/improvements for bugs, features additions, and additional
language support.

Never used or tested it.
Could be of value for those desiring an alternate to existing free
programs(Macrium, EaseUS ToDo, AOMEI)

At this stage, and only for my personal using ATI 2020 perpetual(5 device
license) and Macrium(paid) for Windows 10/11(desktop/laptop) and ATI 2020
and Macrium(free on the Surface 3 tablet)....
- No plans to test on the desktop and laptop as long as ATI2020 and
Macrium work.
- If necessary, on the Surface 3, I'd probably try the longer history
of known, tested(mine and others) of EaseUS and AOMEI image/backup
programs before testing the Hasleo product.
=> As noted, my opinion having two programs in use that work, and
having tested two others(EaseUS and AOMEI)....others may find having an
additional image/backup program of additional value.

+1 and Shoutout to Gordon for providing an alternative free program for
imaging etc. for Windows. Thanks.

You have to wonder at times, where stuff like this comes from...

You will notice, the feature set is a copy of every other backup program.
Or rather, the marketing information is a copy.

And like any backup/restore program, you have to test these for
yourself. If someone had their machine blown up, in the first ten
minutes of usage, that would be useful feedback. But if a person said
"it did a backup and a restore for me", that would not give me
a very warm feeling, because some tiny difference in my environment
might cause it to fail.

For example, some programs do not do a CHKDSK on a partition
before backing it up. And that or an equivalent of it, should
be done rather than just blindly backing up a partition.

I find, when I have problems with Macrium, the root cause can be
some partition operation I did in Linux. It can be pretty hard
to trace, exactly how a disk ended up in an abnormal state. And
such abnormal states can affect attempts at backup (works) and
restore (fails to boot).

Just a note on AOMEI. I recently tried to restore an AOMEI system image,
using the latest verison of AOMEI, and came up with a secure boot
violation. I tried a second image from the month before; same thing.

Don't know what happened, but I had to go back to a Windows System Image
from several months before to restore my machine.

I generally keep 3 months of images with a WSI every third month. I'm
glad I did that.

I have since switched to Macrium Free 8, but haven't tried to restore
from it yet.

Will version 7 do a file and folder backup, or only a full image
backup?

And can version 7 mount and explore backup files created by version
8?

The free version will do a full image.

I think file and folder, is a paid option. Never tested it.

And version 7 might be able to mount a version 8. It all
depends on whether you are using something which is version 8
only (Incremental Forever???). It's always possible 7 and 8 have
no differences, at that level. An Incremental Forever, at rest,
should just be an Incremental. It's the tool settings, the menu item,
the software itself, which adds the Forever behavior (consolidation
of incrementals to synthesize a new Full).

I've had reasonable luck with the Version 6 and IMG2VHD.exe but
if it was screwing up, on the other hand, it might not say anything.
I would think the best odds are with Full Backup (the simplest format).
They must have stopped including that EXE, for a reason. VHD files
have a 2.2TB limit. VHDX is too obscure, for anyone to give a
rats ass. VHD is more of a "standard" in terms of the virtualization
container matrix. And while I have tested extra-large containers
just for fun, it would take a long time to do a P2V on a big disk
(the way Macrium does with IMG2VHD) in any case.

For the purposes of using the Free version, I only upgrade to the
point that W10/W11 backups work properly. Which is V7.3 . I don't
need to go past there. V6.3.1865 is the minimum version. V7.3 is
comfortably past, the minimum version.

Thanks, Paul. I've done a download while it's still there. Since it's
110 MB, I assume it's a full installer and not a "thin" installer
that requires files from the server at install time.

It is in version 8, definitely. But I was already using the paid
version, so I only learned that from the documentation.

AFAIK I'm not.(*) But I'll install 7 on my Win 11 laptop and see if I
can mount a backup file created in v8 on my Win 10 desktop, and
report back what I find.

(*) I do a Full File and Image Backup on my three non-boot partitions
at the start of every month, then Differential backups for the rest
of the month. There are various reasons why I don't want to do an
image backup on any of those three. For the C partition I do full
image backup monthly and that's it, because none of my documents,
photos, music, and so forth are on that drive. I have auto-delete
rules set up within Macrium, but so far they've never needed to
trigger.

When you make a rescue CD in Macrium, that's when
additional downloads could happen.

It depends on what options you select, as to whether a local
WinRE file is used, or a WADK kit is downloaded
from Microsoft to prepare a custom WinPE.

The objective in both cases, is to make a mini-OS that loads into the
X: RAMdisk, so you can do your backup/restore from the CD. Once
Macrium CD is booted, you should be able to eject it, and the
session should continue to run, because it's on X: in RAM. By
using the letter X: , any time an operation is done with respect
to C: , the C: letter is available for its proper purpose.
