My default pdf viewer is qpdfview. Double-clicking on a pdf file will
open it in qpdfview. Right-clicking the file will have "Open with
qpdfview" at the top of the menu.

However, for a pdf file in the rubbish bin (LM 21.1, Nemo 5.8.5),
double-clicking will open it in "Document Viewer" (Xreader).
Right-clicking will show "Open with Document Viewer" at the top of the
menu. "Open with" as the second choice on the right-click menu does not
offer qpdfview at all in the short list of apps. If I select "Other
application" at the bottom of the RC menu, the first one on the list is:
"Default Application
qpdfview"

Any ideas why the Rubbish Bin behaves this way?

"In nemo when you visit trash you actually visit
trash:/// which is effectively a virtual location displaying
the contents of all the different actual trash folders
associated with your user."

This is the same mechanism that Windows uses.

It's a virtualization, a "projection" of a unified trash bin.
The same "Properties" do not necessarily apply, unless
a developer is clever.

Why virtualization ? Well, nobody wants to physically move a
20GB file, from one partition to another, just to "chart"
the movement into a garbage bin. Consequently, materials
stay on their own partition, and "bookkeeping" is done,
to make a unified view of what collection of items is in the trash.

/home/bullwinkle/.local/share/Trash/files/sample.pdf <=== try opening here, should be qpdfview
Opening "from trash bin", not so much.

If I toss a named item into the trash, and then use the find command,
I can locate the home of trash for my user.

/home/bullwinkle/.local/share/Trash
files
throwthisaway
info
throwthisaway.trashinfo <=== presumably, metadata about where the trash came from
This file can be opened in a text editor.

Interesting. I had "Path bar" toolbar view as default, but when changed
to "Location Entry" it changed from "Rubbish Bin" to "trash:///". I see
that something similar occurs with "Recent", which changes to "recent:///".

You are quite right! I can understand the requirement for
virtualisation, but it doesn't seem to make sense for different
"properties" to apply. Is "recent:///" a virtual file? It is different
from "trash:///" as it does use qpdfview as default to open pdf files.
