I have an old Acer machine running Win10. It came with a "Hotkey
Utility" that I used for DVD tray control, until, that is, it started to
lose the systray icon; then subsequently to crash regularly and take
Windows Explorer down with it.
I uninstalled it and found another program;
https://www.digola.com/doorcontrol.html

That has worked excellently for some months, but recently it loses the
systray icon but stays running. No crash, no further damage, as yet.

I can't help but feel that I'm doing something wrong.

Has anybody been down this path?

Ed

Virustotal mentions something about Slovenia, which might correspond to a resource numbered 1060.

The program ownership should be TrustedInstaller. I did not do a test install to verify
or even verify if the installer places the program in a weird place.

*******

This is general advice on repairing it. From a notification area perspective.
There is mention of an iconcache, and that's likely where the damage really is.

https://helpdeskgeek.com/windows-10/how-to-fix-system-tray-or-icons-missing-in-windows-10/

If you open control.exe (Control Panels) and use Programs and Features, the
installer is unlikely to have a "Repair" option. Maybe only an "Uninstall" option.
That would be an attempt to make TrustedInstaller beat some sense into it.

Blimey, that utility seems to be able to do anything!
I don't mind replacing the door-opener prog I have, but if I use that
Nirsoft thing I'd like to extend its potential.
What else do regulars here use it for?

The two door-control apps I've used are the only ones that have ever
displayed this behaviour; ie suddenly unloading the icon from the systray.
I've checked through all the guide into systray settings of your URL,
and I pass all tests. I have 10 icons appear there, and not a one goes
missing apart from the ones mentioned.
Do you recall a recent problem I had? About qbittorrent and its
occasional clinging-to-survival? Well, earlier today that re-occurred; I
clicked on its icon in systray - no response; I went into Task Manager,
clicked on "end task" - no response. And then this with door-control.
This has to be a Win10 problem; I can't see how it's limited to my hardware.

When I put "win10 systray icon disappears" into DDG I get several hits which
complain about the same. The top hit is named "How to Fix System Tray or
Icons Missing in Windows 10" (
https://helpdeskgeek.com/windows-10/how-to-fix-system-tray-or-icons-missing-in-windows-10/ )
, and suggests some settings that could be related.

That's got more functions than a Swiss army penknife - but I bet it
hasn't got an option to make your computer take a stone out of a horse's
hoof ;-)
