Hi Guys,

Every now and then I start getting these messages on all open
terminals or xterms:

Broadcast message from root@m70t (Fri 2023-09-22 07:00:00 AEST):

The system is going down for reboot at Sat 2023-09-23 04:00:00 AEST!

Broadcast message from root@m70t (Fri 2023-09-22 08:00:00 AEST):

The system is going down for reboot at Sat 2023-09-23 04:00:00 AEST!

Broadcast message from root@m70t (Fri 2023-09-22 09:00:00 AEST):

The system is going down for reboot at Sat 2023-09-23 04:00:00 AEST!

Broadcast message from root@m70t (Fri 2023-09-22 10:00:00 AEST):

The system is going down for reboot at Sat 2023-09-23 04:00:00 AEST!

Broadcast message from root@m70t (Fri 2023-09-22 11:00:00 AEST):

The system is going down for reboot at Sat 2023-09-23 04:00:00 AEST!

Broadcast message from root@m70t (Fri 2023-09-22 12:00:00 AEST):

The system is going down for reboot at Sat 2023-09-23 04:00:00 AEST!

Does anybody know why this is happening?
Something to do with apt and the installation of a new kernel maybe?
How can I disable these messages, along with the scheduled shutdown?

Thanks.

Regards,
Jack

After rummaging about in /var/log and lower directectories, I cam across an
entry in the logs from 'unattended upgrades'

unattended-upgrades/unattended-upgrades.log:2023-09-07 06:20:45,816 \
WARNING Shutdown msg: b"Reboot scheduled for Fri 2023-09-08 04:00:00 AEST, \
use 'shutdown -c' to cancel."

> Something to do with apt and the installation of a new kernel maybe?

Seems like it. Now to find the option in 'unattended upgrades' to
disable these shutdowns.

> How can I disable these messages, along with the scheduled shutdown?

As the message says, running "shutdown -c" cancels this shutdown along
with the hourly warning messages.

Jack

It looks like you have "Apply Updates Automatically" turned on. I would just
turn that off. I get update notices in the panel and just manually update
when they come up. Some updates require restarts now. I would rather control
when this happens.

run this command:

sudo apt remove unattended-upgrades

Now when you want updates/upgrades you'll need to run these two commands:

sudo apt update
sudo apt upgrade

I run these two commands once a month. Upgrades/updates are waste of
time for me!! I only run my machine to check emails, browsing and
perhaps shopping sometimes.

I would do it 'graphically'.

Update manager/ Edit menu/ Preferences/ Automation section/

Find which ones are checked to Apply updates automatically as root incl
the one about obsolete kernels.
