I think the damage has been done even before the parents took away the
smartphone. The kid clearly became addicted and dependent on it. So much
so that he considered and hanged himself.

Precisely, removing it was control without understanding. Letting
it happen was something else.

Yeah, Twitter is a cesspool of unpleasant things. I think the only

What is interesting is that it seems, to me, that whatever we're
experiencing now are just variations of the same general thing. It
happened before with newspapers, and it's happening now with the
internet. If society is able to move past the internet and to neural
chips (no thanks), then I presume the same degenerate things will happen
there.

I guess? When I was learning how to drive, the first person that
introduced me to it was my father. We just went slow and he got me
started into the jive of actually driving a car. After that, I had to go
to an actual driving school but I'm glad that my father was able to give
me an initial head start with it.

While professional help is useful, I still think having your family to
guide you in unknown things is a good thing. Even if for just getting
the conversation started.

It has been pointed out often that the most important organ for sex is
the human brain, I am _Not_ going to let them stick anything inside my
head.

I did once and have regretted it for the last 50 years.

I live in a rural area that is being rapidly urbanized. Lots of space to
make mistakes, as we all do.

All my children are better educated than I, so its easy for them to
be arrogant, until they come to a road junction at night and turn off
the lights instead of dipping them. :)

I don't know about that. I could not imagine discussing all that with my
Mother. Maybe is a Catholic childhood.

Some people are not good when teaching their own family. My father, for
instance. He tried to teach my mother do drive, and they both got very
nervous. She learnt with a profesional, then. So did I.

Also parents, as any grown up, has "manias" or "defects" when driving
which they may pass on the next generation. A professional normally doesn't.

Yeah. I agree, knowledge without wisdom can often lead to arrogance and
mistakes. I wish I learned that sooner rather than later, haha!

I've grown up in a Catholic home as well, but not as devout as some of
my peers. We haven't talked about these kind of things at home since,
well, it's inappropriate. But I think I would appreciate being able to
ask these things, even in a roundabout and non-direct way, rather than
being left on my own (or worse, finding degenerate people) to learn
about it.

I would rather not say, a practice popular at the time (1962), but it lead
to surprises a couple of years ago when they tried to do a body scan on
me for a different reason. The machine gave a few beeps and stopped. Who
ever designed the machine was wiser than the ones that were operating it
that day, and had ignored the checklist that had in it `reason that the
scan should not be used on this patient.

What could have happened if the scan had gone ahead?. According to the
nurse that had ignored the warning, it would have pulled some metal out
of the side of my head.

The metal question is there because many people have metal plates put
into their skulls after brain injuries, and forget about that after a
few years.

Now, you know more about me than I remember. I am the guy who keeps
setting off beeps at entry to airports.

This only works IF you don't have hangups about the topic yourself,
and are approachable. In reality, not just in your own mind. My
parents did not qualify (my niece told me that she and her sisters had
a joke that they knew my mom had sex twice, because she had two children).

I always thought it a portmanteau of twit and witter since it seems
to be full of wittering twits.

I was on twitter until I wished some unpleasant things on Russian soldiers
in Ukraine and got cancelled. I don’t feel like I’m missing much, though.

Let's hear it for ignorance. :-p

I heard a story about a vocational school instructor demonstrating a
nail gun. He pointed out that it had an interlock that wouldn't let
it fire unless it was pressed hard against something. To demonstrate,
he held it up near his head (but not touching) and squeezed the trigger.
The interlock failed and the gun shot a nail into his head, with
fatal results. The students learned an unexpected but valuable lesson.

I suspect that is likely down to your system fonts. The quoted emojis
render quite nicely for me in a terminal on macOS. As far as e-mail goes
emojis render in almost any desktop MUA I've used in the last decade
including mutt and Outlook.

No. That one above (I just skipped through it and hope not missed it) is
just about motherboards. I think it was in his channel Explaining The
Future, as it makes more sense. But cannot find it. I think he made it
two or three years ago.
