Linux Mint 21.2 Cinnamon

Somehow I hadn't noticed it before, but tracker-miner-fs-3 turned out
to be quite a resource hog. No idea why it was installed. I decided to
remove it completely. There are warnings on the web against
uninstalling it, but I haven't noticed any adverse effects yet.

How to :

(Q)
sudo apt remove tracker tracker-extract tracker-miner-fs

Did the trick on ubuntu. After that , you can reboot or kill the
tracker process(es). His trash will be in .cache folder e.g.

/home/$USER/.cache/tracker*

And can install via

sudo apt install tracker-miner-fs

https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/694065/how-to-really-completely-disable-gnome-tracker
(/Q)

(or use Synaptic)

Good riddance!

IDK, I see very little system load from this, 0% cpu, 17.6MB, priority
set to 'very-low'. It's just a meta-data indexer used by things like
Nemo / Nautilus to make finding stuff quicker. I do tend to turn OFF
'Menu >> Settings >> Privacy >> remember recently accessed files' which
I don't find useful and likely utilizes tracker less overall. Doing
that doesn't seem to break this tracker tool which presumably is used
for maintainign various application:file relations.

Getting current status in TERM:
--
$ tracker status
Currently indexed: 9455 files, 721 folders
Remaining space on database partition: 215.0 GB (48.24%)
All data miners are idle, indexing complete
--

Use 'tracker help [cmd]' for full command set and options.

https://manpages.ubuntu.com/manpages/xenial/man1/tracker-miner-fs.1.html

This is conceptually similar to the Windows Search Indexer.

and the only reason we would care about such a thing, is the
"pathological cases".

Certain folders should be excluded from any scanning list.

Something like your example would be the case.
A loop can develop, if you insist on scanning the .cache
and pick up the fresh tracker* items. Changes here should
be excluded and ignored by the tool.

/home/$USER/.cache/tracker*

One reason automatically generated exclusions may not be
working properly, is if there is something about your
collection of file system overlays, which is not a pattern
the developer was aware of, or did not have a strategy for.

Summary: A software entity, with opportunities to enter infinite loops.
Has happened on Windows, early on, took many months to stomp
out the looping behaviors.

Some people have to prevent crap like this from entering
their email area. if the mail tool uses .eml and loose files,
this can be a heavy load for a tracker and a bad idea. It
can interact badly with reading mail.

If you did an "strace" on it, you might see repeated references
to the same files.

Paul
