A site I've started visiting has unfortunately long titles (>60 char).
Suggesting they be shortened would be inappropriate.

My personal problem is I wish to have several pages open on one screen.
There are only (page width)/(number of tabs) characters displayable.

For my idiosyncratic purposes the last few characters would be fine.
I can think of some other alternatives.

My QUESTION:
Is it feasible to display something other than the HTML defined page
title as the TAB LABEL?

afaik no browser offers that.
If I want to know what the "rest of the url" looks like I hold the mouse
pointer over the url. It shows me more than I actually wish to know but
that is not a problem.

That addresses a different issue.

My use case is, when having used the "Open All in Tabs" function of the
bookmark menu, choosing which tab to open.

The bookmarked pages are from a reference site that isn't quite
organized the way I would naturally use it. That led to think of
alternative idea in my original post.

I don't have the HTML &/or JavaScript background to implement it.
I was thinking of some very small locally stored pages whose pseudo-code
would resemble:

<html>
<title>Desired TAB label</title>
<body>
Create a window
Display target URL in window just created
</body></html>

Feasible?
Comments?
TIA

A possible solution is to consistently access these pages via a Perl
script on localhost. Contriving how to do that without undue
inconvenience might be a challenge as I don't know your needs or work
habits. One option would be a page in your home directory with a FORM
into which you can paste the target URL with an ACTION attribute that
passes the URL to the cgi-bin script.

But if you regularly use http://localhost/cgi-bin/script?REAL-URL-HERE
that's what should appear in bookmarks for future reference.

The script can use wget to fetch the whole document/page and edit the
HTML in any way you like. It can then construct minimal HTTP protocol
headers and return the page to your browser. You only want to change
the TITLE text so you won't need extensive knowledge of HTML.

I do something of this kind for several sites that I visit frequently,
using Perl regular expressions to identify and eliminate cruft or
re-write URLs to point back through the script.

Obviously, you could use any language for the script but the regex
capabilities of Perl have proved very convenient for me.

Thank you for your response.
I have never had contact with perl. A few years ago I tried TCL/TK.
As I'll soon turn 80, "undue inconvenience" is not an issue.
A realizable immediate goal would be how to display a web page in a TK
"window" (correct term?). If retirement isn't for learning then what?

I'm not sure how closely what you do matches what I want. I'll try to
convert your description to pseudo-code and then tweak it for my needs.

Simple: use the tab tooltip.

Less simple: use a proxy redirect page like this to load tabs that show
the desired label for 5000ms:

<!DOCTYPE html>
<html>
<head>
<title>Desired TAB label</title>
<meta property="redirect" content="5000; url=ORIGINAL_URL">
</head>
<body>
</body>
</html>

Even less simple: use a proxy iframe page like this to load tabs that
show the desired label forever, but only works if the target site allows
IFRAME embedding:

<!DOCTYPE html>
<html>
<head>
<title>Desired TAB label</title>
</head>
<body>
<iframe src="ORIGINAL_URL" title="Desired TAB label" height="100%"
width="100%" style="border:none;"></iframe>
</body>
</html>

I'd go with "Simple"!

Problems with that approach
1. title is only displayed momentarily.
2. though long, the title does not include desired info.
Which is why I wrote:

I have essentially no practice creating my own HTML. SeaMonkey's
Composer has been adequate for my needs. Can you point me to suitable
references to proper use of
( <meta property="redirect" content="5000; url=ORIGINAL_URL">" )
and
( <iframe src="ORIGINAL_URL" title="Desired TAB label"
height="100%" width="100%" style="border:none;"></iframe> )

I'll be able to try those out by this afternoon.
I'll report back.

Thank you.

As to explanations of HTML syntax, I've rediscovered
https://www.w3schools.com ;}!

I tried both your HTML suggestions.
The first failed completely, displaying only a blank screen.

However the 2nd displayed the top portion and full width of the URL.
The displayed scroll bars function so all content was available.
Specifying height and width in pixels instead of % was better.

For my *specific* hardware/software combo specifying
height="500" width="900"
gave the desired result.

My set up includes:
Dell Latitude E6410 laptop
Cornea CT1704 display driven by ARandR as front end for XRandR
Debian 9.13
SeaMonkey 2.49.4 {with JavaScript disabled by default}

As I posted ~3 minutes after you, that was the suggestion that worked.

As the target site is at least 20 years old and maintained by volunteers
I don't expect sudden changes in existing pages.
I've been wrong before <*GRIN*>
