Your poor SSD is going to give up the ghost with the constant OS installs. I
tried Ubuntu 23.10 a couple months ago. It seemed to work fine (even on my
trailing edge hardware) but I just don't like Gnome 3 and Ubuntu's
increasing use of Snaps. Did you ever figure out if your speaker issue was
OS or hardware related? (You may have mentioned that, but I don't the
remember the result.)

I figured out a few things, actually.

In the case of the speakers, merely unscrewing the bottom panel will
allow the speakers to work fine again. It seems that the bottom panel is
probably too tight. I recall losing one of the original screws at some
point and replacing it with one that was almost identical, but it might
have cause it to tighten up too severely. I'm not sure. I'm fine keeping
it unscrewed at every point except one since it's tight regardless, and
I might want to want quick access there anyway if ever I need to upgrade
the RAM or the SSD.

For the fingerprint sensor, the most likely scenario is that it is
simply defective. When I got my laptop back from repairs to replace the
keyboard, they replaced the entire top panel. By doing so, I got a new
keyboard but also a new fingerprint sensor. To say the least, it didn't
work right immediately. I tried everything I could to get it working
without success, until I noticed that if it was enabled, the BIOS would
periodically freeze and restart. I sent it back and they gave it back to
me within a week with the problem temporarily solved. I realize now that
they didn't bother to replace it, assuming that it was just a driver
issue. Considering how insecure fingerprint logins are and how unwilling
I am to send it out anyway, I'm content to just disable the sensor. If
another problem arises, I'll send it out since I have a warranty until
June. I'm thinking it's a matter of time before the fans need replacing,
so I'll send it out when that happens.

As for the SSD eventually dying, who cares? I can get a replacement for
less than $100 or one that's twice the size for a little more. We're no
longer in the 90s when such things required you to remortgage your home. :)

Yeah, but it's against the C++ "standard". You'll get tons of complaints
from the compiler.

Of course it is. Prefer it to be deterministic!

Don't x86-64 CPU's have built-in random number generators, these days?
A truly random (or random enough for anything) source, that can be
read?

Yes, the Intel CPUs have the "rdrand" instruction:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RDRAND

There are also many hardware "addons" that plug in to PCI
slots, or USB ports, that generate random numbers.

Other software uses the sound card:

Huh.. That's good to know. Then I'll switch to C then. There was a time
I knew C pretty well (and C++), but 30+ years throws all that to
somewhere you'd probably access only seconds after the process of death
has started.

By yourself? Or are you taking a college course in it?

Some old dude once told me (way back - in late 1980s) that reading and
understanding Kernighan and Richie's C book (the 2nd ed) and doing all
its exercises is enough to become a C programmer as well as passing the
interview for a C programmer job!... I had responded to him like, "How
do you show them what you know?". He said, "You only have to show them
evidence of having successfully done _all_ the exercises in that book -
they'll hire you on the spot." ... :) Hehe :) Is this, in this day and
times, still correct? Has C changed since the 2nd ed of that book
(1988)? Are there better books now available to take that same role even
better?

Yes, that's my point. You refuse to believe anything written in the
English spoken media. And at the same time you believe FF/NV/FR/whatever
when he spoke nonsense about professionnel development. So why anyone
should be concerned about your opinion?

A cro-magnon human usually has a big belly and a large ass (and thick
fingers). Under that big belly, if that human is male, something is
hanging. Short or long, that hanging thing is the "Nazi" that invariably
comes with him. And in that particular case, size won't matter.

I hope it helped.

I didn't buy that book. I saw it a couple of times in bookstores but it
was too expensive for its size. Physics books are very expensive too,
but they're at least thick :)

And although I wanted to do that someday, somehow it never happened. So
I still don't know what the old dude said was (or is) true or not.

Online tutorials and courses (for me) aren't as effective as a
programming book. In a programming book I make all sorts of notes and
marks while reading and learning it, to turn that resource into a nice,
fast, and yet comprehensive reference book; so as soon as I'm done with
first reading of it, it's also turned into a jewel of a companion while
programming.

You can't do that with an online course. So what they offer has this
type of flaw to it.

With math and physics, such notes on the book aren't enough to learn it
and use it later as reference. You'd have to use other techniques to
master them (which we were taught in those "ELS" center that I was
describing to the dude with the professional wrestler autobiography
book). So online courses in those subjects are just jokes.

But notes and various marks, if carefully employed, are sufficient for a
programming language book. I've done it several times before. Please let
me know if you stumbled upon a good and up-to-date and comprehensive C
programming language book. I will buy that. Pirating doesn't work for
such books, for same reasons I just explained.

If you want to learn C, my sage advice is to learn assembly language
first.

C is just shorthand for assembly. In fact, the System V Binary API
is just a template for all C types and C program structure:

https://gitlab.com/x86-psABIs/x86-64-ABI

Learn assembly language first. Then C will naturally fall into place.

There is no better environment for learning assembly language than
GNU/Linux.

Get the NASM assembler, the best in the world, and start to program:

https://www.nasm.us/

Use DDD, a front end to the GNU Debugger, to follow all the changes
to registers and memory of your program:

http://www.gnu.org/software/ddd/

Good luck.

So you're suggesting that every male is a Nazi?

"C makes it easy to shoot yourself in the foot; C++ makes it harder, but
when you do it blows your whole leg off".

https://www.stroustrup.com/quotes.html

There are some excellent links on the page. If you don't have it I'd
suggest Stroustrup's book. Some tutorials mistake what you can do with C++
in some instances with what you should do all the time.

It's fallen out of favor but some of the books etc. that were aimed at
Visual C++ stressed Hungarian notation and COM.

I'll keep this post, and will attend to it later when I get time to
begin that fun :) Right now my main fun is limited to usenet while I'm
resting or waiting for something.

But this "assembly" thing is so ancient to me that makes me a bit
hesitant. It was something that in 1972 half of the math students in
university of Tehran were always talking about and taking courses in.
Back then, and only in that last year, their department was still in the
same building as physics department was, and we shared all levels of the
building together, so one way or another, our innards would get mixed up
and we'd, for instance, over-hear all this talk about "assembly
language" this and that, when we made our clandestine meander to force
open the lower part of one of their lockers where we knew the guy was
keeping a carton of Winston cigarettes :) We'd take one from the carton
in a way that he'd either become aware of it only days later, or never
at all :) The semi fucked up lower part of the locker door had lost its
information value. Somebody else had already messed the door up, so
further messing it up didn't warn anything to the student about the
state of his nice carton of shiny Winston cigarettes.

They were stealing stuff from our lockers too! I remember I lost my lab
coat right before the start of the math students' one and only chemistry
course that was mandatory for them to take!

We didn't have a "computer department" then. So anything computer was
taking place concurrently inside the math department. It seemed to me
that half of what the students were learning was math and the other half
computer related stuff. Signs on the walls declaring these "assembly
classes" were all over, all the time, even in the evening courses for
another huge batch of students who had a daytime job.

It was just one year like that, then physics department moved to a brand
new beautiful building right by the nuclear reactor a few kilometers
away (but still in university owned grounds). But even that one year of
mingling with those "math" majors, created lasting friendships for me.
At 4 am, in Tehran's airport, when I was being hugged by a tiny cluster
of friends and family to say goodbye to me before my coming to USA, one
of them present was a math guy from that 1st year in the university ... :)

So this "assembly" language to me is like being told "you need to study
Greek before learning C". Honestly!

But... it might be fun. I'll keep your message.

I think I read that somewhere as well, perhaps even mentioned by Richie
himself. I vaguely remember that he said that to some authority while
the language was still under development. Not sure at all that was the
case though.

Individuals like Richie (and of course some women) should not die.. He
died way, way, too soon. When I look at that Nazi Netanyahu's face, I
suspect he's getting the latest exclusive treatments for keeping someone
young and alive. Stem cells and stuff. That son of a bitch should live
and even look younger, but individuals like Richie should die so soon.

Fuck this dictatorship and the Sheep holding it up.

World will be a better place to live, not worse! Just give us more time,
you suckers.

Nobody suggested it. I defined it. Didn't you ask me to "define" it?

Aren't you cro-magnon? Shouldn't you have a dick? Of course you should
have a dick, so the Nazi resides there, right with you, and always
within your reach. It lives with you. Ask Pope The Penis X, if you don't
believe me.

So as a cro-magnon, when you look down there, and look at it, you'd
naturally say, "Just what it is about my dick that I'm supposed to
define!?" And that prompts you to ask me for more information.

You're not wrong! It's just your dick, that's all, and that's where the
Nazi is. A Nazi is your dick!

That's the definition of a Nazi.

Hahhah :) Two down.

You're on the right track.

Those who kill file me are in need of a moderator. Therefore, usenet is
too good for them.

I think most of you COLA guys should go to another social media and have
a moderator so nobody ever let you know what your species actually is.
You can't change anything about it anyway, so no loss. Better even not
knowing it.

I said it in another post just yesterday as well. Usenet is too good for
COLA.

To "suggest" requires thought. He's just mindlessly regurgitating brain-dead
propaganda.
